Our love story is beautiful because it shows what happens when two friends take a chance on love and build an unbreakable bond. Our love caught both of us by surprise but it's given birth to the most beautiful relationship. We met at a Youth Conference in 2011 and became good friends shortly after. In 2013, our relationship began to take an interesting turn. Since then, we've had many ups and downs, but we are excited about this next chapter and the beginning of a beautiful life together.
It was 2011 on a Friday night (I think) at my church's Youth Conference. I saw Martina sitting at the front of the church and I curiously asked Chrismar who she was and he started to tell me. I immediately made up my own perception of her because of how she looked and that she was a Pastor's daughter. I was like "ok she's probably one of those holier than thou people" that I wanted nothing to do with, that same night after church we were introduced and immediately my perspective about her changed because of her exuberant personality. However, that was that for that night. A couple months had gone by and we were at another church conference and after church we all went to IHOP. When it came time to order food she ordered Milk as her beverage of choice and everybody thought that was a bit different. I took delight in it and gave her the name "milk" while laughing and it caught on to everybody and it was the hit of the night. As time went by and we became friends she then became my "Martini.". I remember I use to text her from time to time and we would have short conversations and I would always ask her if she has any friends she could hook me up with and she would always say no. That was a lie because she had plenty of them (she just always wanted me for herself) I use to always enjoy whenever she would come from Spelman to the Wiillams' house because she would bring such great vibes around. Then she was gone for a while I guess because of exams and stuff so one day I decided to text her saying "MILK" and we started talking I suggested to her that we should do something one day. And me being a goof I told her she would have to pay for herself because it wasn't a date (lool) . Anyways we decided to go see a play at her school along with Chrismar. I picked her up that night and I was very excited to see her. During that same week when she was at the Williams' house we went out to eat at a restaurant called Cheddar's with Lisa and Jamaal and that’s where it all began.
We met in 2011 at a Youth Conference. I remember seeing him sit in the back of the church with a hoodie on. He looked completely uninterested lol. That set the tone for my first impression of Javaun; he was a rude boy. As time went on and I became close friends with Lisa and I would spend weekends at her house. When I would come over Javaun would be there with Chrismar, arguing over video games lol. I would always laugh with Lisa about how miserable he was but, as time passed he and I began to share more and more conversations. Fast forward to Youth Conference 2012. After one of the services we all went out to IHOP. I ordered milk with my meal. Well everyone just thought it was hilarious and Javaun started me calling me milk and it caught on. We ended up exchanging numbers; don’t ask me how that happened. Fast forward to 2013, I hadn’t been back to church in a while and one day I got a text that read, “ MILK!” I was pleasantly surprised and he asked me if I wanted to hang out but he made it very clear that he wasn’t paying for the both of us lol. Well, that made me laugh and I couldn't refuse the offer. We ended going to see a play at my school with one of our other friends. He came and picked me up and I was like, oh this is nice, but honestly I wasn’t even thinking about us like that. But I remember thinking that this wasn't the same person I met three years ago. He was still the same funny guy but there was definitely something different. The next day, we went to lunch with our two friends that had just started dating (Lisa and Jamaal) and we rode in the back seat together. At the time I was just getting into Instagram and somehow we bonded over what picture to post and the rest is history. He suddenly became part of my everyday life. We literally talked every day. By the end of senior year, I knew he was the one. It took him some time to realize but I wouldn't change anything about our journey because it's brought us here.
I was completely surprised honestly. A lot of other people in our circle had recently gotten engaged and I was like there’s no way Javaun is going to do it now. It was the day after my birthday, which is when I was expecting it, but when it didn’t happen I figured, ok he’s going to wait, which I was totally fine with. But I started to get suspicious after we got dressed Saturday night and we weren’t heading downtown. He made a really big deal about me buying something nice so I just knew we were going somewhere in the city. But when we pulled out and went South on 1-75 I knew instantly. I immediately started panicking because I wasn’t mentally prepared. After a grueling 15-minute drive we pulled to a stop. He got out and someone opened my door. I felt that hand and knew immediately that it was my dad. He didn't say anything but I knew the smell. He struggled to lead me inside with my shoes but when we finally stopped they took off my makeshift blindfold and revealed a room with my all my favorite people in the world, well most of them at least. In the center of room was a circle of roses and in the middle stood my best friend and the love of my life. I turned and saw my mom and like a big baby burst into tears. I was brought into the center of the circle and Javaun got down on one knee and the rest is history.
