Kamah Asha and Kelsey met in the Spring of 2013 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Mrs. Magee's social work human behavior course. Kelsey sat one row over and one seat in front of Kamah - perfect spot for her to watch Kelsey with intrigue for the new few months. Kelsey was completely unaware that Asha existed. Meanwhile, Asha was so annoyed by Kelsey's boistrous personality in the classroom and the fact that they were "stealing" Kamah's best friend, Holly. Over time, Kamah found joy in Kelsey's big personality, humor, and kindness. Still, they had never actually had a real conversation! Finally, on the last day of class, they BOTH hung out in the campus library cafe along with Holly and exchanged numbers. A whole summer passed...
Coincidentally, in the Fall of 2013 Kamah and Kelsey had the same Economics course. When Asha arrived early to the classroom, Kelsey was there napping to music. Asha woke Kelsey to say hi. Kelsey opened their eyes to see Kamah standing over them like a creep. Asha, being a flower child, invited Kelsey to wait outside in the garden with her. Instead, they waited inside in the air conditioning. It would take Asha a whole month to get Kelsey to join her in the garden. But once they did, the two of them raced to the garden each day and skipped class way too often to sit in the grass among the roses showing each other new music and sort of creating a mix tape to their relationship. In this garden they fell in love. In this garden, while listening to "A Thousand Years" they would share their first kiss. Who needed econ class anyway?
Both Kamah & Kelsey were active in their own churches. They began attending church together & one summer they traveled to New Mexico attending Glorrietta Collegiate Week. During this transformational time, they both realized that God had called them to this very moment & this very relationship for a purpose that God would reveal if they continued to focus on the most important charge, to love God, love people, & share & exude the light of Christ. They prayed that God would use their relationship as a conduit for His message about the limitless nature of God & love. Being LGBTQ in their faith & in today's social climate, Kamah & Kelsey have endured social & spiritual rejection. Individually, they battled the effects of these experiences on their mental, physical, & spiritual health. However, the couple held fast to their supportive friends & family who continued to pray for their success, & those that brought them joy, love, & support. It takes a village, & the two of them had one. Two scriptures roused their spirits & kept them reaching for relationships with God, realizing that their love was not a tragedy: Romans 8:35, 37-39: Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction, anguish, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword?...No, in all these things we're more than victorious through Him who loved us. For I'm persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God! Hebrews 6: 17-19: Because God wanted to show His unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it's impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe & secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.
As the couple's relationship grew, Kamah's flower child heart introduced Kelsey to various secret nature spots on campus that grew to have deep meaning to them both. These would become clue locations in the scavenger hunt Kelsey built for Kamah. Some of Kelsey's friends, Joy & Natalie, planned to join the couple for an afternoon out. Coincidentally they would go to Kamah's favorite resturaunt. However, at the last minute, Kelsey had to stay to help their dad with a "home improvement". Unbeknownst to Kamah, that was a cover for Kelsey to carry out secret plans. Kamah was beyond mad that their plans had been spoiled, but Joy & Natalie were determined to go to lunch. After lunch, Kamah recieved a letter from Kelsey...a clue.
1. "Come to the classroom where our MINDS first met." Asha instantly knew this was White Hall, the social work building where they met in Mrs. Magee's class. There, their mutual friend Holly was waiting with clue #2. Kamah began to realize something big was happening. 2. "Come to the tree where our lives intertwined like it's roots." Again, Asha instantly knew this was the beautiful oak tree she had named Tallulah. They had climbed it together & sat on its branches talking & laughing. Awaiting at this tree was Kamah's lifelong friend, Jordan. She was overjoyed to see Jordan so far from their hometown conspiring in this romantic plot. Kelsey had carved their initials in the bark, their love forever marked. Jordan gave Asha clue 3. 3. "Come to where Aslan lives." Aslan is the Lion from "The Chronicles of Narnia". Narnia is the name Asha gave to a place in the woods of Hammond. It has winding paths, a pond with various piers, a creek, & all sorts of whimsical surprises very few know about. It felt like walking through an opening in the brush into the land of Narnia. Asha went there & found a clue pinned to a tree, below more intial carvings. 4. "You thought this was the end? Not quite. Come to the garden where our SOULS first met." Asha knew Kelsey was referring to Tinsley Gardens where they had fallen in love. Onward she went. Kamah walked into the garden to find her friends who had helped Kelsey execute this perfect plan. She followed the path of rose petals to the center of a heart where Kelsey was waiting. Kelsey read the most touching love letter and asked Asha to marry them. In a moment of suspense Asha said, "I will if you say yes too." Kelsey was confused as Asha rumaged to the bottom of her purse where an egagment ring for Kelsey had been waiting in case of a surprise such as this. Kamah proposed with the ring for Kelsey & the shock rippled through the crowd. They both said yes as rose petals began to be tossed around them. It was better than the movies.
Kamah Asha and Kelsey are transforming their last name!! Traditionally, one spouse will take the last name of the other. Growing up girls, both of them had been mentally prepared by society to give up their given last name. In this unconventional situation, there were many options, like hyphenating. But the one that felt right in their hearts was to choose a new last name together. Their hearts desire was something unique, nearly unheard of, with deep meaning, and something that meant or translated to "love", as that is the purpose, the ministry, and testimony of their lives. At some point they stopped stressing and knew God would "send a sign". During a night of word play, they came upon "Lovelle". Pronounced: luv-elle, the heart of the name is Love. The meaning and translation of the name is powerful for Kamah and Kelsey deep within their souls. It is the perfect way to tie their lives together in name. While Kamah Asha is so proud to be a Martin, Vaughn, Kirk, and Wilson, and Kelsey is proud to be a Stevenson, Carrier, Moore, and Reynolds, the two of them cannot wait to start living the Lovelle life. The couple appreciate your support in this new adventure and welcome any monogrammed gifts using L's. Kamah's new initials will be KAL and Kelsey's will be KRL. The couple’s monograms will be KLK or AKL.
