Less than a half hour drive from Owl's Nest you'll find Franconia Notch State Park - a must-see! Franconia Notch is a major mountain pass located in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. The State Park offers travelers swimming, fishing, boating at Echo Lake, riding the aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain or even hike on the Appalachian Trail.

An hour and a half from Thornton you'll find Mt. Washington - the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288.2 ft. The Mount Washington State Park is surrounded by the extensive 750,000-acre White Mountain National Forest. On a clear day, views from the 6,288-foot summit extend beyond New Hampshire as far as 130 miles to Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean.

An hour outside of Owl's Nest is The Mount Washington Cog Railway. The world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and the second steepest rack railway in the world after the Pilatus Railway in Switzerland. The railway is approximately 3 miles long and ascends Mount Washington's western slope, beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet above sea level and ending just short of the mountain's summit peak of 6,288 feet.

Starting about a half hour from Thornton, you can view the Kancamagus Highway - a 34.5 mile scenic drive along NH's Rt. 112 in Northern New Hampshire that is well known as one of the best Fall Foliage viewing areas in the country. The Kancamagus Highway is now designated an American Scenic Byway for its rich history, aesthetic beauty and culture.
