How We Met

Tale As Old As Time: A College Love Story

As I entered into my senior year at Minnesota State University Moorhead, I had two choices for my capstone course. One option was advertising, the other was public relations (my degree was a combination of both). After thinking it through and coming to a conclusion that I can't remember now, advertising was the winner for me. However, after a few days in the advertising class, I changed my mind and switched over to public relations - and I'm eternally grateful for that choice. When I hopped over to the public relations capstone class, we were already a few days into the school year. Sitting in the classroom where I spent 90% of my school time (seriously, I hardly left Flora Frick Hall), I watched and recognized most of the students that piled in. One after the other, all of them were girl classmates. But there was one boy who trickled in, and his name was Connor. Yep, that's right. Connor was the only boy in the class, and we ended up in the same year-long group together. Over time and many hours spent in the library working on our campaign project, I developed a crush. Little did I know, he had a crush on me as well. When we both figured out we were interested in each other, our relationship blossomed from there. Now, here we are, planning our wedding and future together. I am blessed beyond measure.

The Proposal

Birthday Surprise

I knew that I had wanted to propose to Kassidy for a long time, but I was struggling with how to do it. I wanted to obviously catch her by surprise but I also wanted the proposal to be special. I had been tossing around a few ideas to some friends and family when I finally came up with it. After I asked for Perry and Sheryl's blessing I let them in on the plan, which was to pop the question in late October at the family cabin. All I had to do now was play it cool... Well let's just say after two weeks of holding in this surprise, I couldn't wait any longer and I wanted to propose ASAP. Lucky for me, my birthday was just a few days away. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity as she wouldn't suspect a thing. So the day of my birthday I hatched my plan and called up my good friend Tyler to come document the moment. Before we left for my birthday dinner I had Tyler call me and say he needed a suit jacket for a video his company was filming. This wasn't super out of the ordinary so thankfully Kassidy didn't think twice about the request. As we arrived at the proposal spot (the Gazebo in Highland Park, Downtown Fargo) everything was going as planned and Tyler was in his hiding spot ready to capture it all. Unfortunately as we got up to the gazebo a family with little kids decided to run inside to grab some family photos. Inside I was losing it as it seemed as though I had just watched my proposal idea go up in flames. Luckily Tyler was able to improvise on the fly and came out of his hiding spot to talk to us and say he was waiting for the rest of his team to show up. We made some small talk and before we knew it the family had left. Tyler asked if we wanted some nice couple pictures since we were there and Kassidy and I obliged. We took a couple of awkward photos until I got Kassidy to turn her back to me. I dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry me. She made me the happiest man alive by saying yes and luckily we captured it all.
