Out of a class size of 40, Jacob and Olivia were paired up in a group, with two other students, for a Film class project. This was February 2016, a few weeks before Jacob's birthday and Spring Break. The group's first assignment (not by choice) was to produce a silent film about... "Love." So, the group had a meeting scheduled for one weekday afternoon in the library, but as it happened, only two people showed up: Jacob and Olivia. Turns out, both of them were secretly excited things happened that way. If you ask Olivia, she'll say: "I thought he was really cute, but then he opened his mouth." She remembers Jacob becoming even cuter and adds, "When he started talking, I was instantly attracted to how smart he was. It's been five years, you'd think he'd run out of things to say, but he never does." If you ask Jacob, he recalls the day at the library as "the complete opposite of stressful" and says, "I was attracted to her smile and the way she carried herself. Hearing her laugh was contagious, and there was something so unique about her." Quick aside, for those who are begging to know, they were BOTH awkward when they first met. Neither of them are effortlessly cool, and they've accepted it. Despite their uncool-ness, they both made major impressions on each other that day in the library. As the weeks passed, the group continued to meet and work on the project. As funny as it seems, Jacob and Olivia had to ACT like a couple, before they ever went on their first date. And, in front of a camera! Both of them were nervous about it, but ultimately remember feeling naturally comfortable with each other. On March 24th, Olivia asked Jacob out to an extra-credit event at the local performing arts center. After the event, the two went out for pizza and beer (typical, college kids) and that, friends and family, was their first date. And now, the couple would be honored by your presence and support as they forge a deeper bond, and a new anniversary date.
Jacob's side of the story: "All I knew is that I wanted to surprise her. But, I'm bad at lying and keeping secrets so I had a challenge ahead. Once I purchased the ring, I started planning. Part of me felt obligated to hire a "secret" photographer and all that. But, something told me to hire no one... invite no one... My gut feeling was that - being photographers and videographers - so much of our life together had been documented. Filmed. Photographed. Captured. So, I knew what I had to do to make this moment as romantic as possible: keep it just between the two of us. Here's what I did to get around the secrecy/surprise challenge: I made three different plans of action and picked a specific date. Depending on the day Olivia had that day, I would decide THAT DAY where and how I was going to propose. Of course, I already knew all the things I wanted to say. Long story short, she calls me as she's leaving work that day and says she'd like tacos for dinner (of course she did) so we headed downtown. In the car I told her I wanted to stop at this location on the way because I was "scouting for an upcoming graduation photo shoot" that did exist, except, I wasn't actually scouting that location. It was a law firm with a garden and fountains in the front, and I knew no one was going to be there at that time. With no one around, no photographers or videographers hiding in the bushes, I took her hand, got on one knee, and surprised her. I don't recall *everything* I said, but the part that made her snort tears was when I told her this moment - forever in time - will only be in our memories and no one else's. I think I did pretty well."
