We met in college at George Mason University, one afternoon while students gathered to share testimonies from a recent retreat. Kj hadn’t attended the retreat, but he’d been invited to listen as others reflected on their experiences. Among the voices that day was Dezire. As she spoke, something about her presence stood out to Kj. He couldn’t quite explain it, but he felt drawn to her in a way he had never experienced before. Later, he would describe it as the first time a woman truly captured his attention—not just because of how she looked, but because of her spirit and sincerity. As the gathering came to a close, Dezire approached Kj and invited him to a Christian college event, wanting only to share the love of Jesus with him. In that moment, Kj heard—clearly, for the first time in his life—the audible voice of God say: “This is who I have for you.”
After that first encounter at George Mason University, where God spoke so clearly to Kj, our friendship grew over the next two years. We shared conversations, prayers, and moments that deepened our connection while keeping God at the center. In August 2023, after years of friendship, we finally expressed our feelings for one another. This wasn’t the first time Kj had shared his heart with Dezire, but earlier, she wasn’t ready. God’s timing, however, is perfect. When the moment came, we both knew we wanted to pursue a relationship. Still, we felt led by the Lord to wait. For four months, we remained in prayer and sought God’s refinement, allowing Him to prepare our hearts for the journey ahead. We officially began our courtship in December 2023. Though distance separated us — with Kj in Virginia and Dezire in New York — God used that season to strengthen our communication, build our trust, and draw us closer to Him. What could have been an obstacle became a foundation for deeper connection. On March 1, 2025, Kj surprised Dezire with a proposal she’ll never forget. What she thought was a birthday photoshoot for Kj in New York turned out to be the day our next chapter began. Surrounded by friends and family, Kj asked, and we both said yes to the story God is writing for our lives.
