Our Story by Ben Goodspeed

Love at 42,000ft

I'm sweating already. And I haven't even sat down in my seat yet. I do not like flying. Something about being 42,000 feet in the air that really bothers me. And I also probably watch too many movies. Ok there's my seat. There is already a girl in the aisle seat but at least I have the window. As long as no one sits in the middle seat this could be an ok ride. The plane has almost fully boarded and still no one sitting next to me. God is good! As I stare at the seat in front of me, trying to gather my nerves for the flight, I see someone out of the corner of my eye tell the aisle seat girl that she's sitting next to her. Dang. Thats next to me too. Well at least I can tell she's pretty. Then I turn and look as she scoots in and settles in her seat. Shoot she's REALLY pretty. God IS good! Then it dawns on me. Welp that's not gonna help my nerves. Or my sweating, as that kicks into overdrive. Guess I won't be taking my sweatshirt off all flight. Great. Now I'm just locked in on the seat in front of me, then the window, now back to the seat in front. My nerves have me squirming in my seat at this point. Should I say something to her? If its no good, that could make for a pretty awkward trip, and we haven't even left the ground yet. Better just be quiet… "So what percentage of these airplanes successfully land after takeoff?" I say to her. Ok I guess my brain isn't listening to me anymore. At first she looks confused as she says "I don't know that..." Then a second later as she ponders the question further. "Why would you ask me that right now?!" She says it aggressively but still with a smile and a slight laugh. "I do not know." I say. Ok that wasn't great but I did get a chuckle. I might have a chance here! The rest of the trip is sort of a blur as I just try to keep her interested with small talk and trivia games on the little headrest screens. Thank you Delta. She likes to laugh. Thats good cause I'm giving her all my best material and if I strikeout I didn't save anything to fallback on. Now we're about to land and I'm pretty close to soaking through my sweatshirt. Almost made it. I stare out my window as the ground comes into view. "Oh that's pretty." I say. "Oh let me see." She says as she does almost a full half lean over me to look out the window. Gentlemen I swear to you, it was like a full 2 or 3 seconds. Bingo. My sweatshirt is now drenched but I think I'm in. It's a black sweatshirt so as long as I can keep her from accidentally touching me I should be good. We've landed now and waiting to de-board. I've got to ask for her number but I'm terrified. Im right at the finish line and I'm choking! Just too much of a mess. This story could go from great to pitiful if I don't do something quick. Our row is next up and she's about to get up and walk out of my life forever. It was fun while it lasted. She hands me her phone. "Put your number in" She says with a smile. Bingo. Man do I got it. I am one smooth operator believe you me. The touch screen doesn't respond well to clammy hands but I finally manage to get my name and number in there. "Goodspeed? Oh thats a cool last name, I like that." She says. And little did I know then just how much she liked it!
