How we met

Spring 2014

Our story began back when we were both Eagles at Florida Gulf Coast University. Spencer had the seat behind Alyssa in “Intro to Literature” on Mondays and Wednesdays of that spring semester. Although not romantically involved- Alyssa always made it a point to say hello as she admittingly had a little bit of a crush on Spencer. The two of us became good acquaintances, and shared a few hugs as we occasionally ran into each other around campus or at the local bar, Rusty’s. We kept in contact throughout the years via social media and watched each other's lives unfold for the years to come. On one serendipitous evening, with a bit of peer pressure and a smidge of liquid courage at a bachelorette party, Alyssa messaged Spencer on Instagram and offered to buy him a drink the next time he was in town. The next morning Spencer woke up at a bachelor party, to a message from the “nice girl from literature class”. Hungover, and never willing to turn down a free drink, Spencer happily obliged but due to being stationed in Georgia he was unsure when they would be able to meet. The two of us texted, called, and FaceTimed for a month before we were able to meet for that drink. We met at Dal Contadino after hours for a very private first date. Needless to say, it went very well. Seven and a half hours and a state away from each other- we somehow made it work for two whole years. We lived for the weekends we could see each other, and never missed an opportunity to talk with one another. After two years, and the end of Spencer’s enlistment, the two of us decided it was time to make our weekend rendezvous into an everyday reality. We moved into a townhouse in Jacksonville and began our lives together. In the past two years as “roommates” we have had so many things to celebrate. Spencer got his Master’s Degree while Alyssa obtained her Professional Certificate. We have had the opportunity for a fair amount of traveling throughout the states, and Europe. Lastly, we started our family with our puppy Marlow. Spencer finally proposed on a summer morning in Big Talbot Island- one of our local favorite spots. With shaky hands and a big smile, Alyssa said, “YES!”.
