Banff is a magical place, especially during the winter. Snowbound funtivities include but are not limited to skiing, ice hikes, dog sledding, ice skating, snow shoeing, and toboganning. For those looking for a more relaxing weekend, we recommend exploring the castle (it's a city of it's own). Mischief Managed

Johnston Canyon Ice Walk

Johnston Canyon Ice Walk

Lower falls of Johnston Canyon freeze over for winter. Fairly easy hike for all ages. Dress warm! Directions from Banff: Head west on the Trans-Canada Hwy for approximately 5 kms (3 miles). Take the exit for the Bow Valley Parkway and continue west for 18kms (11 miles) until you see the sign for Johnston Canyon on your right.

~45 minute drive from Banff. Lake Louise freezes over in the winter and becomes an ice skating rink. It is supposed to be one of the most beautiful rinks in the world.

Banff Sunshine Ski Resort

Sunshine Village is located 15km southwest of town. The Ski Resort has lots of terrain (3,358 acres) with slopes for rookies up to extreme slopes for pro-skiers. Sunshine has the best and most snow of the Banff ski areas due to high elevation.

Lake Louise is a little out, 57km from town, a drive that takes about 40 minutes. The Lake Louise Ski Resort is large (4,200 acres) and there are lots of long runs. Lake Louise has a great spread of terrain for all ability levels.

Mount Norquay

Mt Norquay is the ski hill most local to the Banff township, only 6km and a 10 minute drive away. Norquay is a small ski resort (190 acres) that’s cheap and perfect for beginners.
