If you're expecting a Hollywood love story, then you may be disappointed. In fact, if Spencer's previous bosses at work had taken Katie's advice not to hire him, then there may not have been a story to tell! She thought he was looking for a free trip to Texas, and he thought she was a pushy recruiter. Not exactly love at first sight, but definitely a happy ending. It all began with a black eye if you can believe it. After seeing Katie chatting with a coworker who showed up with a fresh shiner, Spencer's curiosity led to an instant message that would begin to melt the ice. One message led to a conversation, which led to a series of conversations, and slowly they realized just how much they had in common. In true Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fashion, when they weren't able to chat at work, they resorted to emails on the weekends. It took a brave friend of Katie's to take her phone and text Spencer (super smooth, right?) for them to hang out for the first time in person. To avoid Spencer spending his first birthday in Texas alone, Katie took him to dinner for their first date (she paid - Spencer was now 0 for 2 if you're keeping score). They spent the following few years setting big milestones. Spencer became the first boyfriend to ever be invited to Kansas to meet Katie's family, and Katie was the first girl to ever be invited on the Clancy-family beach trip. Never one to rush a decision (see: why Katie thought he wasn't a good hire), Spencer took a "little" bit of time to propose. When he did though, he knew the perfect place - Katie's grandparents' farm in Kansas. The catch is that a snow storm threatened to spoil the weekend he picked. Unbeknownst to Katie, they raced the storm and made it just in time. Spencer asked Katie to marry him under a tree her great grandfather planted when her grandparents first built their home. She said yes, and the snowstorm hit the next day. Maybe there was a little more Hollywood in their story after all...
