How We Met

03.28.23

Tim is telling this story because he says I (My'Kelya) don't do a good job. So, I am writing, but this story is written from Tim's perspective, with My'Kelya's interjections...enjoy. Tim's sister and My'Kelya's friend were best friends in college and suggested we should talk to each other (thanks Christiana and Amanda!). We both were given a few pictures and Tim was given My'Kelya's number. Tim rose up "with base in his voice" and texted me 3 days later. Tim says he tried to make it "as least awkward as possible" (it was still a little awkward). Tim says, "The next day, my girl had enough and said 'I need to see you - can we FaceTime?'". "My (Tim's) initial reaction was 'wow that's early. We've only had each other's number for a day. She is not playing. Boy...'" (I (My'Kelya) was not trying to waste time or get catfished, and I wasn't interested in being anyone's "friend"/texting buddy.) When we video-chatted, my first impression was "Okay...he's cute, like really cute...and very gentle. I like that. And he's really easy to talk to." Tim says, "You were very attentive. Your chin was on your hand and you just listened and had a lot of questions." Tim planned for us to meet up at my (My'Kelya's) work trip a few weeks later. Tim picked me up at the hotel - which ended up being super awkward because Tim parked his car and then walked over to the hotel front door before he realized I was already outside. He texted me asking where I was and then realized I was sitting on the bench in front of him, and then he awkwardly turned around and went back to get the car to come pick me up. In his defense, I had him waiting 2 hours because I was tired from work. I needed a nap. (If you know me, you know my naps are critical, especially when meeting people. I actually didn't get to take my nap, but anyway...). Next, we went to a Japanese restaurant where, according to Tim, "you (My'Kelya) did little to no talking at all" (again, I missed my nap). There was a little girl in the restaurant as we came in who was at the booth behind us. Tim describes her as "so excited to see you. You didn't even know her. It was awesome." (I just thought she was adorable and didn't think much of playing with her.) Tim says "that's when I knew that your love for kids was real. When someone who doesn't know you comes up to you and acts like you're the best thing ever - I just knew." (He's so sweet). We finished the dinner and spent some more time together that day and the next, continuing to awkwardly fumble our way through jokes, conversations about things/people that we love, and about our greatest love: Jesus Christ. Most importantly for me, I continued to learn how loving and selfless Tim is (both that day by waiting for me and carrying the conversations, and every day by how he loves God and loves me). Those awkward moments have become very sweet memories for us.
