Opal Creek a place with crystal clear waters and a waterslide made by mother nature. I was so excited to see such a place! It was hot and we tried venturing out to see other parts of the creek. Its true what they say. That place was magical. We kept walking to find the infamous Opal Pool everyone spoke of. A few kids told us it was just a little further. We passed by a few cabins and a bridge, but we finally found it!! A little bit of sun snuck through, the beauty of this pool was unbelievable. We stayed for a bit and swam. A few people found it too and got in. Just as we were about to leave AJ asked the people to take a photo of us. We got it and walked back. It was still early and we had a lot of time. We stumbled upon a few people going down the waterslide that was when I told AJ we had to go down it. He smiled and went to find an opening to get to the otherside. We found the natural waterslide and went down a few times. It was so much fun! The slide led to big pool. It was deep, but you could see the color of the rocks at the bottom. The sun shined perfect that day and my exact thought was ‘this is incredible.’ AJ then said he saw something in the water, so he jumped in a grabbed it. He came out of the water with a beautiful Opal ring and said “look what I found.” My first thought was ‘someone lost it’ so I started to think of who and how we could get it back to them. My mind was running in circles that I didn’t even realize what AJ had asked me. “Will you marry me?” My heart was pounding and I was confused at first. AJ smiled and that was all I needed to see that this was real. “Yes!”
We had planned a long awaited hike to a trail in umpqua woods. The trail is named after my birthstone, the opal, which made it a special place for us to visit together. It was made even more special as I had packed along some precious cargo. An opal. We arrived at the trailhead at high noon. The sun was beating down, it was hot. We’d packed lots of lunch and drinking water, which did well to hide my precious cargo. I made sure I grabbed anything from the bags that we may need. As we hiked i kept a close eye out for the perfect spot to pop the question. We passes a waterfall, small, romantic, a definate contender. We marched by an old mining entrance, dark, COLD, creepy. Certainly not our spot. Then we passed an waterslide, with quite a few folks sliding down it and swimming around. The slide emptied into a large reservoir of the clearest water ive ever seen, one could see all the way to the bottom. Potentially the place. Finally we made it to the trail head. We did some swimming and photos, the water was ice cold. It was far too loud to do any proposing though. So I decided to hold.
On our way back melissa begged to stop and try the water slide, it was probably 3:30 by then and I knew this had to be when I made my move. We stopped to eat somelunch which is when I snuck the ring into my pocket. Surprisinlgy I felt nervous, my hands were clammy. We ate. We swam, and we enjoyed the slide. Then I saw something in the water. I told melissa it was shiny, and i wanted to check it out. I dove down into the pool and swam to the bottom. When I reached the bottom I pulled the ring out of my pocket and gripped it as hard as I could. I didnt want to drop it. Swimming back to the shore I feigned ignorance and showed melissa what I found at the bottom. Her face lit up she thoughtf somebody may have lost such a beautiful ring. We have to ask around if its anyones! She exclaimed. I struggled for breath as i was coated in ice cold water, i smiled. I asked her, will you marry me? SHE DIDNT EVEN HEAR WHAT I SAID!!!! Panicked and wanting to return it she said “what if somebody lost it.” I smiled and replied “yeah what if.” She then processed what i had said and began to cry happy tears as she put it on her finger. The rest is history
