How They Met

We were "Just Friends"

Joshua and Kimberly met in high school at the very tender age of 16. They met at YEPAW's (Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop) year-round leadership program where they became really good friends for years. Kimberly's mother had always highly admired Joshua's grandmother, and both of their mothers had been well known vocalists in the Akron community. There was no doubt that music would become a major part of their love language. One evening while in rehearsal for a musical production of The Wiz, Kimberly felt the sparks as Joshua began to sing "If I could feel" as the Tin Man. The way her heart melted and her body tingled, she knew this was a connection unmatched. It was only a few months later that Joshua would have a similar encounter watching Kimberly perform at a Motown musical production when he felt those same sparks. It was that night he told Kimberly's mother that he was going to marry her daughter. For months, they played this game of being "just friends" which eventually looked more like Josh "having his cake and eating it too." Much like a roller coaster, their relationship as "friends" traveled up and down and caused a great deal of confusion and frustration. After a long period of separation and an intense prayer life God intervened. While Kimberly was away studying abroad she committed to praying for their relationship. She asked the Lord for direction and in the form of rainfall and a rainbow the Lord spoke very clearly and confirmed the promise of His hand in their marriage. Unbeknownst to her, years later during Joshua's prayer time the Lord spoke and confirmed the very same promise of their marriage to him. After 7 years of friendship and 2 years of dating officially, in just a few months, we will all watch a beautiful display of God's promises being yes and amen. The Bible says trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not to your own understanding, but in all of your ways acknowledge Him and He promises that He'll direct your path.
