This is a great way to spend your day, especially if you have kids! Take a 20 minute ferry ride from Harkers Island to the Cape (a nationally protected and preserved seashore). Once on the island, checkout the lighthouse, ride down to the point or just relax on the beach. When you get back to the "mainland" check out the Core Sound Museum to learn a little about the Downeast Heritage.
Spend a few hours at Fort Macon State Park before hitting the beach. Fort Macon is a popular field trip destination for local schools, in fact, Kalen went quite often as a young girl. While at Fort Macon, you can learn about a fort that was operational during the Civil War and even explore a multi-mile walking trail that will lead you from the sound-side to the ocean-side. Highly recommend this!
Every couple has their favorite local "hole in the wall" joint. For Caleb and I, its Beach Bumz. This place may not look like much...but the pizza is YUM-MY. If you're looking for a great place on the Morehead City Waterfront, we recommend you check it out.
Ioanni's is another favorite of mine and Caleb's...though, we will tell you, do NOT go to Ioanni's if you're in a rush. While the food is unbeatable bar food, the wait times can be on the longer side. The food is cheap, good and the atmosphere (prior to 10 PM) is fun and relaxed. Give this place a try if you're coming off the beach and want some greasy but delicious food.
