We're Getting Married!

I love that we chose ThatSkyCouple as our hashtag, because without Sky we wouldn’t be a couple—we wouldn’t have even met. It was late when I was getting on the day we met. I realized I hadn't done my daily quests, and it was coming to the end of the day, so I rushed to finish things before it was too late. Just as I did, I ran into a friend, and we started chatting and hanging out in my favorite place in the game - by a forest campfire. Along comes someone we don't know, and in order to see them, we had to touch our candles together. I instantly got excited when I saw them, because they were wearing my all-time cosmetic in Sky. Because I started playing after this limited time cosmetic was available, I couldn't get it for myself, so I liked to make friends with people who had it so I could at least see it while I played the game. It was a mask shaped like a canine head and a halo behind its ears, and the game called it the Anubis mask. This person, who introduced themselves as Controser, or Con for short, now became Conubis in my friends list, and after he, my friend and I started talking, I realized we had a lot in common. After that we hung out online every day together. Looking back, it definitely felt like dates. We ended the days, messaging on Discord those sappy things like "I really enjoyed tonight! I can't wait to hang out with you tomorrow!" Funny enough, I told him I wasn't looking for anyone because I was tired of putting in energy where I wasn't getting the same energy back, so if I got in a relationship, it would be something that naturally happened. And then a week later...I got jealous for the first time in my life. People who also loved his mask started crowding around him in the game, and I was upset that they were all around him...so I kidnapped him! I grabbed him by the hand and took him to a different area where we could hang out just the two of us. It only took a week y'all! I thought it had happened at least a month later, but it was just a week of hanging together, and I fell hard. But I don't regret it. I actually am happy that even after nervously exchanging photos, and calling each other, and then video calling each other, that he was also into me. So much that he came to see me when I visited San Francisco. And only 3,4 months later, he asks: "Sooo....if I proposed to you, what would you say?" And a few weeks later, he actually did. The day after we came back from meeting his family on the other side of the country, our poor cat Nubis (named in honor of the mask that brought us together) came walking in with something tucked in his collar. It was one of those glasses sleeves that popped open on the short side. He looked miserable, stumbling toward me with a look that said, “Help.” I remember saying, “Aw, is dad messing with you?” as I pulled the thing from his collar. I opened and closed it a few times before I realized there was a piece of paper in there. And just as I pulled it out and read “My dad would like to know if you’d marry him,” in he comes, Matthew, on one knee and holding a candle with a ring on it. Not gonna lie guys, I was so shocked, I don’t even remember what I blubbered before I said, “Of course!” And the rest is history. It’s crazy to think that it’s thanks to a silly little game that we loved playing, and if I decided to just not get on and do some quests, and if we hadn’t stopped where we did, lit, or even decided to sit and talk with each other, we wouldn’t be where we are. Out of the millions of people I could've met that night, I met the guy I’m so comfortable around, that spending the rest of my life with him just feels like the natural thing to do. Now “Her Story” is becoming “Our Story”, and I can’t wait to see this story unfold!

I have always been a gamer, ever since I was young. I remember when my brother got the game Journey for our PlayStation. It changed my whole view as now games could be an art form as well as fun gameplay. ThatGameCompany (the people who made Journey) later made a mobile game called Sky: Children of the Light where my own Journey began and led me to the love of my life. In Sky, you earn different clothing the longer you play and do activities. I was lucky enough to start the game in 2020 and was able to get a mask that looks like the Egyptian god, Anubis. Because of how rare this mask is, many people love it and ask to be friends. In the forest level, I was waiting for an event to get some currency next to a campfire, when I met her. Xanise came to check my look out and instantly added me as a friend. I felt compelled to sit at a bench and talk to her which I never do, and the next thing I knew, I completely lost track of time. The event I wanted to go to was already over, but I didn't care. I was having the time of my life. All it took was a week. I noticed how much she was falling for me and that I was falling for her. After many video and voice calls, she reached out to me saying she wished she'd told me sooner as her friend was taking her to San Francisco and we could have met. I love being spontaneous, so I ran to my boss asking for some time off, and then went on a 15 hour drive to surprise her. Meeting her in person was exciting and nerve-wracking, but once we locked eyes for the first time I felt like I fell all over again. I had gotten the opportunity to meet some of her family during that trip and after, but since most my family was on the East coast I had not introduced her yet. So, we took a trip out to meet with my parents and grandparents. We went through hardships, laughs, and tears together. Both my parents could tell just how good she was to me and I still remember my mom telling me that if I didn't end up marrying her that she would, haha. Getting back to our apartment I knew what I wanted to do. I made a trip out to some stores to pick up a fake candle, some paper, and a pouch. I enrolled the help of our child (the cat Nubis) and left a note saying "My dad wants to know if you will marry him" in the pouch and stuck it under his collar. He, like a very good boy, went straight to her and delivered the message. I then took the ring, put it on the candle, and walked in the room to offer the candle with the ring on one knee. The candle was significant to us both as when we added each other as friends in Sky we offered candles (the game currency) to each other. I am very happy that she said yes. Now we are here on this day taking the next big step in our Journey. I am looking forward to placing the ring on her finger and saying "I do". As I know this is only just the beginning of our future and I couldn't ever see my life without her in it.
