Travel Note

Recommended Lodging & Transportation

We have blocked rooms at two hotels at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon - Hyatt Place and Residence Inn. We recommend that our guests stay at one of those two locations, along with the other locations listed below. More information about these locations is below. For those who decide to not rent a car, we recommend that guests cluster together in groups of 4-6 to take a taxi/Lyft/Uber or reserve a van through Canyon Transportation (see info below) from SLC airport to one of the five hotels/lodges listed below. Unfortunately, none of the five hotels/lodges offer airport shuttle service, and Trax doesn't offer access. We also recommend that guests cluster together in groups of 4-6 to take a taxi/Lyft/Uber from their lodging to Solitude and back. By doing this, the average cost per guest for total transportation should be $20-28.

Flight

Salt Lake City International Airport

SLC Airport is Salt Lake City's main airport. It's serviced by all of the main airlines with direct flights from most major domestic and several international airports. It's also one of the main hubs for Delta and is a major Southwest Airlines destination, so we recommend checking out those two airlines for the best deals. The airport is about a 40 minute drive to Solitude Mountain Resort. For those staying in hotels in downtown SLC, many of them provide airport shuttles. You may also take either TRAX (light rail) or a public bus. Car rental agencies are available. Finally, taxis are available for a maximum rate of $25-30 (depending on lodging location). Lyft and Uber are available as well.

Train

TRAX

TRAX, UTA’s light rail system, offers affordable and convenient connections between SLC airport, downtown SLC (where many lodging options are located), and other destinations throughout Salt Lake valley (but not the wedding venue). TRAX runs seven days per week, with 15-minute frequency during peak times.

Train

Canyon Transportation (Shuttle between SLC Airport and Big Cottonwood Canyon)

For those guests staying at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon (Hyatt Place, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn) or in the canyon (Solitude Village, Brighton Lodge, Silver Fork Lodge, AirBnBs) and would prefer not to rent a car, there are several shared private shuttles that can take you directly there from SLC airport and back. We have no experiences with these shuttles, but Canyon Transportation seems legit, as it's listed on the SLC Airport website.

Brighton Lodge

8302 South Brighton Loop Road
Brighton, UT 84121
 (801) 532-4731

This is probably the best canyon option for those who want budget-friendly yet comfortable lodging in a gorgeous mountain setting that's very close to Solitude. Located at Brighton Ski Resort (where Terry and his family grew up skiing/snowboarding, and where Elena learned to snowboard), Brighton Lodge is a short 5 minute drive up the canyon from Solitude Mountain Resort. The alpine-style, 20-room lodge offers comfortable rustic hotel-style accommodation. It also provides easy access to the Lakes Mary, Martha, and Catherine trail. We're unable to block rooms here, but the manager, Monica, told us that rooms should be available for that weekend. So guests can just give them a call. Summer prices are very affordable: Queen Room = $79/night 2-Queen Room = $99/night 4 bunks or 1 Queen Dorm (shared bathroom) = $69/night

Salt Lake City Hotels - Visit Salt Lake Guide

For those who want more lodging options to fit a range of budgets and needs and would prefer to stay in a city, we recommend staying in Salt Lake City, specifically the downtown area. Downtown SLC is easily accessible from the SLC airport via TRAX (SLC's light rail) and is within walking distance to car rental agencies, restaurants, pubs, bars, shopping, pharmacies, and cultural sites such as SLC's most unique tourist attraction, Temple Square (the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Most downtown hotels are approximately 40 minutes by car up gorgeous Big Cottonwood Canyon to Solitude Mountain Resort. Check out Visit Salt Lake below, which has a hotel guide that allows you to search by price and location.

Best Park City Hotels on Main Street - Guide

Park City, UT 84060

Park City is a popular tourist destination in Utah. A former mining town historically populated by non-Mormons, it's home to two ski resorts, several venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics, serves as the main base for the Sundance Film Festival, and has a thriving, historic downtown with many restaurants, bars, shopping, and several lodging options. If you'd like to stay in Park City, it's about a 40 minute drive from the SLC airport and about a 30 minute drive along beautiful Guardsman's Pass to Solitude Mountain Resort. View the guide below for the best hotels on Park City's Main Street.

House Or Rental

Home Sharing Services

If you'd prefer to use a home sharing service like AirBnB for your lodging, several privately-owned condos in Solitude Village are available for around $100-160/night that can fit between 4-10 guests. There are also several cabins available in the nearby Brighton Resort area. If staying in SLC, we recommend staying either in downtown or in the Avenues, which is a historic, liberal neighborhood close to downtown. Another good neighborhood is Sugarhouse. Adjacent to Westminster College, it's a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood known for its many independent businesses. It's a bit farther away from downtown SLC but a bit closer to Big Cottonwood Canyon.
