We met at an evening Driver's Ed course in 2016. Jay was homeschooled and I went to a private school, which meant we had to take an evening driving course at a local high-school. The instructor of the course, Mr. Wilson, caught onto us pretty quick, and started to arrange our driving and observing times so that they just so happened to overlap in the most mysterious ways. It was admittedly quite awkward at first, and after the class had ended Jay and I kept up as friends for a few months before "becoming official." We were together for about a year before Jay had to leave for college, and we've been long-distance for about five years!
I was a junior in college in South Carolina and my 21st birthday was coming up at the end of January. My birthday fell in the middle of the week, and so Jay had told me that he would visit over the weekend. My roommates, determined to give me a fun 21, planned for us to go out to a fancy restaurant. We got ready and were excited to go out on the town, I open the door and Jay was standing on my front porch, three days earlier than he was supposed to arrive. He came with flowers, a suit, and the whole nine. One of my roommates, who I thought had gone out earlier in the day, was outside filming the entire thing. Later I was told that all of my roommates were in on it, each tasked with different jobs and stages of diversion. It was quite the elaborate plan, and very well executed by all involved, and yes, I was very surprised.
