A group of friends-of-friends invited me to join them for a night out, just a few weeks after move-in day my freshman year of college. My group met another group, and at some point during the evening, this girl from the adjoining group kept telling me how fascinating it was that my watch could light up to be read in the dark. I always thought I'd need a Ferrari to get the woman of my dreams, but apparently if it's meant to be all you really need is a Timex. We had a lot in common - our music tastes, jazz-era literature, staying up too late, and getting into places we had no business being in at 18 and from the suburbs. In the months that followed we went to museums, movies, concerts, ate lunch together between classes, met for coffee, and eventually visited each other's hometowns and met families. We jumped fully into a relationship because we just had too much fun together, laughed too much, and even the "best" things in life only felt the best if we were experiencing them together. We finished each year of school together, started internships, jobs, joined new friend groups, fell out of friend groups, got our first real post-grad apartments, cycled roommates, started new hobbies, built new routines; and then suddenly, all at once, we both felt truly not in college anymore. So we moved into an apartment in New Jersey and got a dog. Our story is a winding journey of growing up, navigating new phases of life, together in uncertainty about everything around us but each other. When you meet someone in the formative years of your life, the connection is exponentially more significant - multiply that by a thousand when it's someone who very quickly became your best friend and the love of your life. It'll be close to ten years of dating by October 1st, but something about this next phase of life with Taylor doesn't feel so scary. We've done it before, together, charging headfirst into another chapter of life.
