The Kentucky Derby is all about betting and horses. For us, it was the best weekend filled with laughter, love, and happy tears. Duncan had every detail planned out, even down to the fine print. He created the perfect ring months in advance, and he had a special program created specially for the two of us (see photos tab). Duncan was extremely nervous before asking, so he did not sleep much the night before. I slept like a baby, just like any other night. The program that was created had special horse names connected to special moments and people in our life as a couple. Race 8 finally was up. Duncan started flipping through the program, showing me the horses and we were talking through which horses to bet on. I found it funny that two horses names matched my dad and my best friend. As I kept reading, each horse meant more and more.. Fun dates.. Favorite songs.. The last horse was named "Always and Forever," a phrase Duncan and I say to each other all the time. Reading that last name, it really hit me. Duncan then asked, "how about you bet on me instead?" He got down on one knee right there against the front railing in the dirt, just yards away from where the horses were lining up to race, to ask me to be his wife. Of course, I said yes. Happy tears commenced. I was shocked and shaking so badly that I had no clue what to do with my hands. I wound up holding my cupped hand out like I was asking for M&Ms. At least it was the left one. Thankfully, there were many loved ones there to experience this moment with us, including my dad who was on the phone. For the rest of the weekend, we were "that couple that got engaged." That felt pretty great. Special thanks to Momma Carin, Holly, and Chris and Ginny Keables. Thank you Pheaton and Patti and Tamara and Richard for your ongoing support. Finally, we appreciate Grandma Caroline for keeping a secret. Thanks to all of you for loving us and celebrating with us!
