Question

How do I get to Tinos?

Answer

Getting to Tinos is easier than it might seem, and we're here to help you every step of the way! You will start by flying from the U.S. to Athens. From Athens, you can reach Tinos via ferry. If you're traveling from the Evansville area, the closest airports are Evansville, Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis. Nashville often has the most affordable flights but choose whatever is the most convenient for you. Once you arrive in Athens, you will take a ferry to Tinos. Athens has two main ferry ports: Piraeus and Rafina. You can travel to Tinos from either one, but Rafina is the closet and easiest to reach from the airport. To get to Rafina Port, you can take: -Taxi: ~25-30 minutes (40-60 Euros) -Bus: ~30-40 minutes, around 3 Euros per person -Private Transfer: Also available if you prefer a pre-booked option. You can check ferry times and book tickets on the official Greek ferry website: ferries.gr (We are happy to help you look at schedules or talk through options!) Another option would be to either take a ferry from Athens to Mykonos or fly from Athens to Mykonos. From either of these options, it would then be a short 20-minute ferry from Mykonos to Tinos - this route sometimes offers more daily departures and may give you extra flexibility, especially for arriving in time for the Welcome Party on Sunday, September 13th. When you arrive at Tinos Port, it is about a 20-25 minute drive to the Airbnb. We're arranging transportation to pick up guests from the port and bring them to the accommodations - more details to come! Quick Note: Be sure to give yourself plenty of time between landing in Athens and catching your ferry. Ferry schedules are limited, and they won't wait for late arrivals. If you would like help planning your timing, let us know - we're more than happy to help make this smooth and stress-free!

Question

Are there special requirements or restrictions for Americans who are traveling to Greece?

Answer

Yes. This is a no brainer, but you will need a passport. If you do not have a passport, you will need to start that process immediately as it can take up to 6 months to get your passport in the mail after submitting the applicaiton which you will have to do in person at your local post office. If you already have a passport, make sure the expiry date is dated AT LEAST 3-6 months after the date of return back to the US as this is a requirement for Americans who are traveling in the Schengen area of Europe (Greece is one of these countries). Additionally, we recommend you still bring your DL (especially if you plan to rent a car) for ID verification as you are at a higher risk of losing your passport if you chose to carry it around with you during the trip. It's much easier to get a license replacement then a passport and you don't want to have issues when trying to return back to the US. Additionally, starting in 2026, Americans are also going to be required to apply for a ETIASEU (European Travel Information and Authorization System) before entering Greece. See the link for more information on this here: https://www.etiaseu.com/us-citizens/etias-greece

Question

How do we get around the island?

Answer

Public transport is limited, and ride shares like Uber and Lyft are not available here. There are taxis available, but they may be pricey. They do have a bus system but based on our research it can be limited. You can rent a car for the best experience! Question

Do I need to bring Euros?

Answer

While most places do accept card nowadays, it is still a good idea to have cash Euros on hand just in case! European markets, especially those on the smaller side or in a more remote area, is an example of places that may only accept cash.

Question

Where can I get Euros?

Answer

Some US banks will allow you to order foreign currency in advance. Otherwise, you will have to withdrawal cash from a European ATM but depending on your bank, you may be subject to hefty international fees. Check with your bank prior to traveling to inquire about their international fees.

Question

What is the time difference between Tinos and Evansville?

Answer

Tinos is in the Eastern European time zone which means that they are 8 hours ahead of Evansville time.

Question

What credit/debit cards are accepted in Europe?

Answer

Mastercard and Visa are accepted almost anywhere and are the best options to use abroad. We do not recommend you using either American Express or Discover as they are not as commonly accepted in Europe. Additionally, we also recommend you using a credit card over your debit card, if possible, in case your card or card information gets stolen as it is a much safer and easier option to dispute suspicious activity and to prevent someone from accessing any cash funds from your actual bank account.

Question

Will my phone work in Europe?

Answer

Yes. There are a few options for this. The least expensive option is to purchase an international SIM card with European phone provider. You can find a variety of plans with an international SIM card that start as low as $10/month for text/talk/data. Here is a link with more information on international SIM cards: https://greeceesim.com/sim-card/ The other and more expensive option would be to speak with your provider about their daily rates for international phone plans. For example, with Verizon, you can access provider services of talk/texting at a daily rate but you have a small daily allowed amount for internet usage, and it is very expensive. The other option would be to only use Wi-Fi when available but then you are limited since not everywhere you go will have public Wi-Fi available for use. IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need to make sure that you either keep your phone in airplane mode or make sure that you have your cellular services in your setting turned off if you don't want to be charged the daily international rate with your US provider as most of them will enroll you in it automatically if cellular services are turned on but you are not using an international SIM card. We know for sure that Verizon and AT&T are providers that will charge you the international travel pass automatically if cellular services are not turned off before landing.

Question

What if I get sick abroad?

Answer

We highly recommend you bringing a variety of basic medications with you as pharmacies and medication are very different in Europe. We recommend you bring medications like ibuprofen/Advil/Tylenol, cold meds, Pepto/tums/etc., motion sickness medication (you will have to take a ferry to get to the island and being sea sick is not a fun experience!), Benadryl, or any other prescription medications you will need to have while on the trip.

Question

Answer

We will be creating a google word document with a generic packing list and adding it here for everyone to view. This will be added to the website at a later time so stay tuned!
