Oaxaca de Juarez is the capital of the state of Oaxaca. Its city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Oaxaca is the Mexican state with the largest percentage of its population identifying as indigenous, mostly Zapotec and Mixtec. The result is a state with rich cultural traditions, world-renowned craftsmen and women, and a diverse cuisine. You cannot leave Oaxaca without trying mole, mezcal, chapulines, chocolate, or tlayudas. We hope you will find time to explore Oaxaca during your stay. Some suggestions: • Visit the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman • Take a guided tour through the Jardin Etnobotánico • Grab a lunch of grilled meat with fresh tortillas at the Pasillo de Humo inside the Mercado 20 de Noviembre, or grab a spot at the Mercado Benito Juarez • Explore the ruins of Mitla, a Zapotec religious site, and Monte Alban, the ancient Zapotec capital • Visit San Martin Tilcajete, home to the workshop/school of master alebrije artisans, Jacobo and María Ángeles • Watch weavers at work in Teotitlan del Valle, where many artisans still use natural dyes in their carpet designs • Step into the home of black or green pottery artisans in San Bartolo Coyotepec, or Santa Maria Azompa • Visit one of the traditional open-air markets (tianguis) such as Zaachila, San Pablo Etla, or Tlacolula. • Sample a variety of mezcals at some of the many fabricas de mezcal in Santiago Matatlán
