We met at Tate’s house, where Honestie was hanging out with one of his former roommates, Josue, and other friends from the Nyack English Congregation. First impressions didn’t set off any particular fireworks, but less than a month later, Josue planned a dance party at the house. We both hung out a little and chatted, but Honestie left early and it definitely seemed off to Tate that she left without telling anyone goodbye. So because we didn’t swap contact info, Tate went to the Nyack meeting the following Tuesday to check on her. This is the contested part of the story where she will say she was impressed, but only if she can say so herself. Okay okay… back to the story. So we spent what felt like 15 minutes talking, but turned out to be a couple hours outside the Kingdom Hall following the meeting, just getting to know what brought each of us to New York, and it immediately clicked that this friendship was something special… but Tate decided to point out that it was probably “best that we not switch numbers, because this is so easy and feelings will probably develop quickly,” so we swapped Instagrams. Literally the same difference, but Honestie started sending the memes first. The friendship blossomed and although time and personal lives separated the two of us, we kept finding our way back to being there through the tough times. Things became more serious after a trip to San Diego, CA for Honestie, and a trip to Fort Wayne, IN for Tate, because when she had travel issues on her way to the wedding of Alexis and Jonathan Beard, Tate was the first person she went to vent about it. While there, she enjoyed the company of her friends and tried to figure out her feelings. Meanwhile, Tate was visiting the Burmese/Myanmar congregation in Indiana and trying to determine if moving away would be the most reasonable choice for him. Once he returned to New York, he texted her and her first question to him was “So are you moving???” When Tate told her no, Honestie recognized it was only a matter of time before he tries to figure things out again, and she didn’t want to miss her chance, so on her return, she wasted no time in calling up one of his elders and doing her research. The following Monday night, Tate and Honestie shared a long chat over goals, personal struggles, and what they wanted for their individual futures in service to Jehovah, and the prayers answered during that conversation cemented the beginning of the rest of their lives together. We can both say with certainty… we’re marrying our best friend. And we couldn’t be happier that Jehovah made it so.
