So, Tamika and I had actually “met” or crossed paths before we truly met. The 1st instance was a snowy Winter night on campus my freshman year, her sophomore, 1st semester at VCU. My friend Chris and I were walking from the Siegel Center when we noticed two young ladies. It was Tamika and a friend of hers. We tried sparking up some conversation as we walked, slightly trailing them. They weren’t much interested, ha. They walked ahead, conversing more amongst themselves than with us. Fast-Foward a couple months later, during 2nd Semester, Chris and I were having a conversation about the character Kiesha from the movie Belly. He’s telling me there's a girl on campus that reminds him of this character. "Remember the girls we walked with from Siegel Center that night?”… I couldn’t recall. Then one day Chris and I were chillin’ in The Commons on campus. Tamika walks in wearing her VCU Track & Field Attire. Her being on the Track & Field Team is why we hadn’t seen much of each other on campus yet. Chris taps me and says “That’s her. That’s the girl that reminds me of Kiesha from Belly. I turn and for the first time I truly see her. I liked what I saw.. We locked eyes that day but that was all. Fast-Forward again, Its Valentines Day weekend on campus and VCU is hosting a speed-dating event. I decide to join in for “shits & giggles”. As I sit down who do I see? Tamika. We locked eyes immediately, and continued to make eye contact. Anticipation grew as I moved closer and closer to my “date” with Tamika. The first thing we did when we got to each other was laugh. There we learned each other’s names and that I was from Brooklyn, and she, Connecticut. We wouldn’t exchange numbers for about another 3 weeks when we bumped into each other in the club. We actually became good friends (Though I had other plans). We were inseparable for the next 8 months as friends, then that turned into a 12 year relationship. And on May 14th 2022, we promise each other to make it a lifetime.
