I think that most strong relationships develop after realizing that the other person has a deep passion that you share and can work towards together. I learned Elise’s passions within 10 minutes of meeting her. We had both just started medical school orientation, and I ended up sitting next to her in a friend’s car as she seriously and intently discussed her love for McDonald’s Spicy McChicken. She was bragging about how she could easily eat 3 in a single setting (this is completely true about Two Entrée Elise btw). My first impression- that she was hilarious- was quickly followed by how smart and caring she is. She is lovely and loving to everyone that she interacts with, and I have never heard a single negative word about her. We got to know each other more over tacos and margaritas on our first date. Time and countless Taco Tuesdays later, it’s amazing to look back and realize how many of life’s challenges and milestones we had faced side by side. She is now Dr. Hwang, surgeon extraordinaire and dog mom, but still always able to make me smile and know that I am loved. She has always challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and try to put others’ first. There is no more perfect occasion than sitting on the couch with her after a long day, knowing that we can be fully content just next to each other. She is the best person that I know, and I am so blessed that she loves me as much as I love her.
