We met in Monterey, California at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLI). We arrived only hours apart from one another, not knowing that we would soon meet and fall in love. Our first conversations were only small talk in passing. Simply exchanging hellos. Yet, through BPOM, we began to grow closer as friends. Black People of Monterey (BPOM), a group created by and for friends of color to study together, enjoy Monterey together, share experiences and support each other on through the beginning of their military careers. We often traveled as a group to enjoy holidays and birthdays since we were away from our families. We became family. Throughout time, through frequent trips to Target, the mail room, and countless areas across California, we became best friends. Although we met during DLI and were BPOM, it wasn't love at first sight. We didn't officially start dating until our November 2020. Our favorite part of our love story is that we have always supported one another. Whether it be in study sessions, group meetings, or just hanging out, we could always depend on the other person to be there. And even today, we know that same principle to be true.
