How we met

12/21/16

Taber and Abby met in Athens, Georgia through mutual friends in the Art and Music community. Taber was smitten with Abby’s artwork, and Abby found Taber’s infectious creativity hard to ignore. Abby was finishing up a dual degree in art education and painting at UGA, and Taber was assistant stage designer for an Athens Touring band. Unable to leave one another’s side, they quickly moved in together and adopted an emotional pit bull named Toby. Abby wasted no time in applying to grduate schools, and soon the three of them were on the road for San Francisco for Abby’s MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. Now Taber, Abby, and Toby live in Denver pursuing various creative projects and looking forward to the future. While life as artists may be an uncertain one, they are lucky to take it on with their best friend and partner.

The Proposal

About a month or 2 before Christmas 2018 I had decided that I was going to ask Abby to marry me. I had gotten the idea to make my own ring out of a quarter from my friend Micheal Wheeler who did the same for his wife. The only stipulation is that the quarter must be from before 1964, because before that quarters were made from real silver. At the time I was working as a pinball repairman and I had access to a lot of quarters. Once I had the ring I carried it with me pretty much everywhere in my bag so that I would be ready in case a perfect opportunity arose. We flew back home to CO on December 28th (Abby's birthday). When we got back I suggested that we take a trip down to my aunt's ghost town in southern Colorado. We packed the car and left and when we got there there was 4-5 feet of snow. The moment still didn't feel quite right so I suggested that we go snowshoeing, which took a little convincing. We trudged through the snowy woods for about an hour before we started to make our way back. We came into a section of the forest filled with aspen trees. we stopped to take it in and as she was looking away I got on 1 knee in the snow.

The Wedding

The idea of the perfect wedding was never really something we wanted to attempt. Once we were engaged and we started to really think about what we wanted this important moment in our lives to look like, we realized that we couldn't rely on the wedding traditions we had seen to provide a ceremony that felt true to us. The main thing that we decided was important to us was that we were committed to each other from now to infinity and beyond and that it was legal and legitimized. On Saturday May 22nd we hosted our first little taco night since the beginning of covid to celebrate our close friends all being fully vaccinated. Our friends' Eliane and Julie made us a beautiful wedding cake and helped us with dinner. We surprised our guests by signing our marriage license at the party. Thus May 22nd is our legal anniversary.

The Small Uptop Ceremony

Taber's Aunt's own a ghost town in southern Colorado, Uptop. We have always loved spending time here. When the property sold and we were invited up for the final weekend with Taber's Dad's side of the family - we decided what better way to start our marriage than with a small ceremony at a place that is so important to us both. The guest list was small and our planning was quick, so unfortunately we couldn't have all of our family and friends attend - we wish all our loved ones could have been there - but we look forward to celebrating with you all in other ways in the coming months!
