How We Met

After Nolan graduated from Essex High School in 2011, Nolan’s family moved from Essex, VT to the dirt roads of Underhill. What Sylvia and Nolan wouldn’t discover until 2 years after the move, was that their families houses were only a half mile down the road from each other. At the time, Sylvia’s sister, Ava, and Nolan’s brother, Riley, were both in the same 4th grade class. The two of them became close friends, spending most days playing around the neighborhood and unknowingly creating the bridge between the two families that would eventually lead to Sylvia and Nolan meeting. One February evening in 2014, the Frey’s invited the parents of the neighborhood, including Sylvia’s parents, to a bonfire. While the kids played in the snow, Nolan and Sylvia’s parents were discovering that both their oldest children were in college to become elementary school teachers. Photos were swapped, stories told, and a plan to introduce the two future teachers was devised. Late that same night Sylvia’s parents came home with stories of an older Frey boy. Sylvia only knew of two Frey boys, Riley and Seth, but had never heard of Nolan. Nolan’s brother Riley now admits he withheld this information because “he saw Sylvia first.” Sylvia was intrigued by the stories of this cute education major with a heart of gold and sent him a message on Facebook. They then exchanged phone numbers and talked back and forth until February break when Nolan would be in Burlington and they would be able to meet for the first time.

After the 1st Date

On February 21st, 2014 Nolan picked Sylvia up at her Champlain College dorm in Burlington for their first date, and many more dates followed. On May 11th 2014, Sylvia and Nolan made their relationship official. Later on that year both Nolan and Sylvia decided to transfer to Johnson State College where they both eventually graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. During their time at Johnson State College, Sylvia and Nolan moved out of their parents' homes and into Sylvia’s childhood home on Smugglers View road in Jeffersonville, where they currently live. After graduating college Nolan worked at local schools as a paraeducator until getting a teaching position at Hyde Park Elementary school. Two years after Nolan was hired to teach the 5th/6th grade class, Sylvia was hired to be Hyde Park Elementary Schools new Kindergarten teacher. A few weeks before Sylvia would start her first public school teaching job, Sylvia and Nolan took a week-long trip to Jacksonhole, WY to visit Nolan’s brother Seth. Shortly after landing in WY, Seth took them to a beautiful spot overlooking the Teton Mountains and Slide Lake where Nolan proposed to Sylvia with a reset version of her grandmother's ring. After 7 years together and a 2 year engagement, Sylvia and Nolan are excited to invite their close friends and family to celebrate the next step in their lifelong journey together.
