We have known each other since we were kids in middle school, always in similar friend groups, and Kyle even dated some of Sylvia’s girlfriends in the early high school days! It wasn’t until junior year of high school when we were in the same AP English class (shout out to our awesome teacher Mrs. Andrews!) when our relationship really blossomed. When there was a new seating chart one day, we sat next to each other, and we often got distracted from our classwork and ended up chatting or having thumb wars. After school, Kyle would *occasionally* text Sylvia asking about the homework, but eventually he started using that line as a way to start conversation outside of the classroom. From there, we became best friends, wanting to spend time together and talking about whatever was on our minds. Our friendship quickly turned into love, and to this day, we still feel like those 16-year-olds who walked down the school hallways chatting and barely making it to class on time.
Nantucket has been a special place for us for a few years now; the beaches, natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere...we love everything about this island, so Kyle knew it was the perfect place to propose. We planned our summer 2021 trip, and Kyle wanted to propose on the first night so the rest of the week was like an engagement celebration and getaway. He was adamant that we do our favorite things on the first night: get Millie’s takeout, eat it on Madaket beach at sunset, and enjoy the crashing waves. Things started to go awry when our takeout order never went through; luckily, we were just happy to be there, so the manager not only got us seats at the packed bar, but they gave us free drinks and comped our entire dinner! Kyle was starting to worry that Syl would be hangry waiting and they would miss sunset, but we were both having such a good time, it didn’t even matter. After getting our food, we sat on the beach; however, it was then that Kyle started to really panic. He wanted to propose soon, as the sun was setting, but people were flocking to the beach. He forgot about this! The reason we love to sit here for dinner is because the sunsets are so beautiful- of course hundreds of people would show up! Kyle knew he couldn’t propose on the beach as he originally planned, but he refused to wait another day. Luckily, Syl was getting cold at this point, so Kyle suggested packing up, walking back to the AirBnb, and catching the rest of the sunset from the balcony of the place. Once we got back, Syl was sitting on the balcony, taking pictures of the sky with her phone, and Kyle was awkwardly pacing in and out of the house, making it seem like something was off. Finally, he walked outside onto the balcony, looked at Syl, dropped to one knee, and got out what he could through the emotion. We were covered in sand and salty air, and it was just the two of us in the final moments of sunset at our favorite place-- it was perfect.
