Question

What should I know about an Orthodox wedding?

Answer

Our wedding will be in the Western Rite Orthodox Christian tradition. The service begins with the Betrothal Ceremony. During the ceremony the bride and groom will be referred to by both their given names (Joel & Sydney) and their Baptismal names (Michael & Sophia). The ceremony will be followed by the Mass, but only the bride and groom will receive the Eucharist. The Orthodox understanding of marriage is that it is a sacred covenant before God and the Church. The Betrothal represents the couple’s vow to give themselves fully to one another in love and faithfulness. Marriage is understood in the Church as a form of “white martyrdom,” in which spouses willingly set aside their individual lives and desires, in order to serve each other, their family, and God, thus modeling Christ’s sacrificial love for His Church. This love bears fruit in the creation of children and in the spiritual growth of the couple. Ultimately, receiving the Eucharist together reflects the couple's shared life in Christ and mutual role to guide each other toward salvation. Guests are warmly welcome, and no prior knowledge is expected. Booklets will be available with the text of the Nuptial Mass for anyone who wishes to follow along, but please return them after the service. The ceremony is primarily sung or chanted, and incense is used throughout the service. Parishioners remain standing for much of the ceremony and Mass; however, standing is not required, and chairs will be readily available for anyone who needs to sit. Feel free to enter and leave the nave as needed during the service, but please refrain from doing so during the Betrothal Ceremony, the Creed, the Gospel reading, and the Consecration of the Eucharist. Head coverings (such as scarves) for women attending the ceremony are gently encouraged but entirely optional. There will also be a basket of headscarves available to borrow at the church.

Question

photography & cell phones

Answer

Please do not use cell phones during the service and either silence them or leave them in your vehicle. As well, please avoid any photography or videography during the service. Our photographer has received guidance from our priest regarding appropriate areas of the church for photographs, and any other photography inside the nave is highly discouraged. There will be an opportunity after the ceremony to take photos with the bride and groom.

Question

Dress Code

Answer

As our ceremony and reception will take place in an Orthodox church, modest, Sunday-best attire is appreciated. We request that ladies choose clothing that covers at least from shoulders to knees and that gentlemen wear long pants and choose slacks rather than jeans.
