Brendan and Sydney's mutual friend, Luke, introduced them at a Graeter's ice cream shop while they were seniors at The Ohio State University. Sydney and Brendan went to an Ohio State basketball game (versus That Team Up North), for their first official date. From there, Brendan asked Sydney to another date, and she agreed. Luke had told Brendan about her love for Disney, so they went to see Disney's Pixar movie, Onward, before the start of their spring break. She agreed to go to a coffee shop for a third date, but they soon learned that their senior year would transition to virtual learning. Yet, Brendan visited Sydney the following week because he wanted to continue seeing her... and the two began dating just days before his birthday.

While Sydney was on a 10-day trip out west to visit the national parks, Brendan was working behind the scenes with Sydney's friends to plan a huge surprise. He was going to travel to Monterey, California, one of Sydney's favorite places in the world, to surprise her and propose. Sydney was on a whale watching tour while Brendan was traveling from Ohio, and he worked with Sydney's friends to find the perfect place in Monterey. They pulled off the biggest surprise, and Sydney said yes!
