Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Sydney Pedersen and Barak La Prairie
Right in the heart of the Midwest, you'll find Freeport, Illinois - a place natives lovingly refer to as "Pretzel City, USA." Yes, our mascot is really a pretzel...it's a long story. What's there to do in town? Honestly, not much. But there are a few hidden gems we'd love to share with you to fill your time. Obviously, you'll be a little busy Saturday afternoon, but below are a few other places you can check out in your free time. We've included a few coffee shops, restaurants, local "attractions," and some neighboring towns that are worth a visit.
Higher Grounds Coffee

Higher Grounds Coffee

1709 South West Avenue, Freeport, IL 61032

A hometown staple - located towards the south end of Freeport. Delicious drinks and bites - lots of coffee and food options, and plenty of room to sit around with a group.

Nine East Coffee

Nine East Coffee

9 East Stephenson Street, Freeport, IL 61032

Another hometown classic - located in downtown Freeport, surrounded by other local and antique shops. This is a great place to hang out with lots of board games to play while you sip.

Coffee and Crumbs Bakery

Coffee and Crumbs Bakery

1022 North Riverside Drive, Freeport, IL 61032

A new "mom & pop" coffee spot, and it's quickly become a community favorite. This is the closest of the recommended coffee shops to the Pedersen home. Delicious bakery treats made fresh every day - the cinnamon rolls are fabulous! Well, really everything is worth a try. They have limited hours, so check that they're open before making the trip.

Union Dairy

Union Dairy

126 East Douglas Street, Freeport, IL 61032

Union Dairy is a Freeport staple, serving up ice cream for over 110 years! Stepping inside the parlor is like stepping back in time - with classic red bar stools and old-time ice cream sodas. It's a must visit with over 51 flavors of ice cream to choose from.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square

Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square

114 East Douglas Street, Freeport, IL 61032

Right next to Union Dairy, you'll find the square where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas famously debated on the U.S. Senate campaign trail in 1858. Douglas' senate win (and Lincoln's subsequent loss) opened the way for Lincoln to win the presidency two years later. The square features a boulder and plaque dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, as well as the life-size statues "Lincoln and Douglas in Debate" by artist Lily Tolpo, which was dedicated in 1992.

Krape Park

Krape Park

1799 Park Boulevard, Freeport, IL 61032

A big park with lots to do! There are several playgrounds and a carousel for the kids in the middle of the park. Check out the disc golf course, walking paths, mini golf, peddle boats, pickleball and tennis, too!
