How it all began

August 2013

Our story begins with a midnight trip to Huddle House, a 24 hour diner in Kansas City. We were in a big group of friends, but we happened to sit next to each other. Everyone was talking and laughing; we were playing a silly game that annoyed Evan so he was pretty quiet. But something caught his eye and he just had to speak up. He turns to me ... and then exclaims - "You have such tiny hands!" ... I honestly did not know how to reply, so I said, "yeaahh. ok?" And that was that. Eventually we all decided it was time to leave the diner. I was pretty slap happy at this point, since it was past my bedtime, so I brilliantly convinced Evan that I could give him a piggy back ride. He reluctantly agreed. I carried him a whole five feet before he made me laugh too much by shouting "Wee!" and comparing me to the little donkey that Robert Downey Jr. rides in the Sherlock Holmes movie... Clearly it was his ability to compliment me that won me over!

How He Proposed

February 2018

Her Version: I. Called. It. I definitely called it. He finally took me star gazing after 4 years of rejecting that idea, and he made sure it was an unforgettable trip! It was the star gazing that tipped me off though. I told him in the car on our way, that this was "so random that I feel like there is a surprise waiting for me!" and he was just silent and let me continue to blabber on. Not even 2 hours later he tells me "I do have a surprise for you" and proposed! I loved that he made sure it was a moment just between us, because that made it even more special. But seriously, I absolutely called it. His Version: Whatever her story is.... well.... that's not exactly how it went! I was super clever! I had it all perfectly planned out. I researched that the best time to see the stars is in the winter on a day where there is no moon (a new moon). The winter weather is supposed to keep the clouds out of the air due to less moisture, and not having a moon makes the stars shine brighter. Then I just had to figure out how to get her out of the city.... Well we were going to STL that weekend, so I figured I would do it on the way. I picked out Hermann, Missouri because it's supposed to be really pretty out there. She was annoying that day trying to guess what we were doing. So, I played mind games with her. I let her talk herself out of the idea that I was going to propose. I'm so clever. Anyways, we got out to Hermann, and then did not know where to go. So, we ended up in a random church parking lot. We saw like 7 stars. Disappointing..... oh well. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. I need to preface this next part real quick. Sydney does not react kindly to surprises. So if she is surprised expect a punch or something coming at you. Back to the story... Her initial response was 'screw you!" This was immediately followed by massive sobbing (on her part). She used my knee as a chair, and gave me head nods as her way of "YES!"

For all the days along the way
