Yoruba Traditional Wedding

Question

What is a traditional Yoruba Wedding?

Answer

A Yoruba wedding is a major celebration! Not only for the marrying couple, but for the parents as well. The Engagement, the first part of the ceremony, is an integral part of the traditional marriage. It is carried out by the Alaga ijoko, who is always a woman. Her duty is to properly officiate and coordinate the proceedings so that each provision of tradition is strictly adhered to.  Such traditions include the groom and his friends "prostrating" (laying flat in front of Bride's parents) asking for her hand and seeking their permission and blessings. The groom must also give gifts and pay the "bride price" as a sign of honor and investment to the bride and her family. In return, the bride will also pay homage to her groom and his parents by greeting and kneeling in front of them.  But it's not all business!! There's a lot of dancing, traditional drumming, current music, humorous banter, delicious food, and immaculate fashion! Weddings are also an occasion to show off!!
