Areas to Stay

If you’re looking for areas to stay, here are some neighborhoods close to the city and sea: - Camps Bay: Just 10 minutes away from the city center, Camps Bay offers a blend of upscale vibes and laid-back beach atmosphere. Think trendy promenades, upscale dining, great nightlife and stunning mountain views. - Sea Point: Also 10 minutes from the city center, Sea Point is bustling with activity. The Sea Point Promenade is a must-visit, along with vibrant markets and diverse dining options. Expect panoramic ocean views and the iconic Signal Hill as your backdrop. Remember, the higher up you stay, the better the view! - Clifton: Clifton, a 15-minute drive, is one of Cape Towns most exclusive neighborhoods. Home to the world famous 4th Beach, you’ll find white sand and crystal clear water. Upscale residential areas and a tranquil atmosphere make it a top choice for a relaxed stay. And as a bonus, Clifton is one of the few Cape Town neighborhoods sheltered from the strong summer winds known to locals as the “South Easter”. - De Waterkant: De Waterkant, a charming area adjacent to the city center, puts you right in the heart of the action. With cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and a mix of boutiques and cafes, it exudes a European feel. This trendy district is a delightful blend of history and modernity. - Tamboerskloof: Head east to Tamboerskloof, around 5 minutes from the city center. This residential haven is nestled against the slopes of Signal Hill, providing a quiet escape with tree-lined streets while still being proximate to some of Cape Towns best dining and nightlife.

Getting Around

Renting a car is straightforward and budget-friendly. Pick from well known companies like Avis, Hertz, and Budget. Remember, we drive on the left side of the road in Cape Town and most cars are stick shift, so make sure you ask for an automatic! Uber is a solid and reliable choice too, but we’d recommend avoiding traditional taxi vans.

Money and Tipping

Money and tipping: South Africa’s local currency is the Rand, denoted by an “R”. Credit cards are widely accepted but we recommend carrying some cash with you to tip and use in the various markets. Standard tipping is 10%, but for exceptional service it’s not uncommon to give more!

Car Guards

If you find someone enthusiastically start helping you back into your parking spot, don’t be alarmed! Car guards are a South African staple and you’ll find them all over the city guarding cars while parked. Car guards tend to wear reflective vests and work on a gratuity basis which is paid after you return to your car. A good tip would be R10-R20 (about .50 to $1).
