A video of Nick proposing at Pinnacle Rock in West Virginia. Excuse the squealing...
It all started when my good buddy Dylan (Groomsman) asked me if I wanted to go to Bethany Beach with him, his girlfriend, and her best friend one summer day, and I agreed. Dylan and I arrived together to meet up with the gals. When we walked onto the beach, Dylan saw his girlfriend out in the distance, and we headed on over. Once we got closer, they both got up from lying in the sun, said "Hi!" to us, and then introduced Jess and I to one another. I couldn't even say my own name right when trying to introduce myself because I couldn't believe how beautiful this gal was. I was so nervous in those few minutes, I finally told Dylan we needed to go back to the truck since I "left my wallet in there." Once we got back to the truck, I asked him who in the world was that gal I just met? She was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. That's when he said the name, "Jessica Blatzheim," and ever since then (even though she was way out of my league and still is) that girl had my heart. After we returned to the beach, we ended up walking back to the boardwalk to get some giant, handmade pizza slices for lunch. While eating our pizza at a small table under the arcade, Dylan and his girlfriend walked down to a coffee shoppe a couple stores down leaving Jess and I by ourselves there. I asked her... "Why would someone like you even talk to someone like me?" That's when she did the most adorable laugh, smiled, and looked at me with her bright blue eyes and said "Why not?" She just continued to smile while I dropped pizza grease on my shirt, and that's when I knew– I'm in love with her.
If you would have asked me when I wanted to get engaged, I would've said "I'm not so sure." In fact, Nick asked me that exact question just a day before it all happened. I remember telling him as we were driving in the truck, "I don't know when the time will be right, but whenever it happens it'll be the perfect time." Little did I know, he had already packed the ring and thought up the plan for it to happen just a day later. It all happened during our annual four wheeling trip to Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia. We decided to go back to the nearby state park called Pinnacle Rock which we had visited the year prior. The stunning views from the huge climbing rocks were something we just couldn't pass up. We took a bunch of pictures just like the ones we took the year before, but I couldn't help but notice it was only Nick and me getting loads of pictures.. from every angle.. Literally, each family member was at a different angle taking photos. Immediately I was thinking of how we were going to hike back down the rocks and I'd tell Nick "I really thought you were gonna propose back there." But before we could leave, Nick dropped down to one knee and asked if I would marry him. In the midst of a bunch of high-pitch squealing on my part, I managed to answer, "Of course I will!" After all the freaking out and excited emotions settled, I realized how right I was: whenever it happened, it would be perfect. And it very much was.
