It all began on a bench outside of their college theatre when a bright and bold Suzanne turned to a sulking, brooding Chuck and said, “I don’t know you. Who are you?” From there they formed a friendship, spending time together in the Texas Wesleyan theatre department and at various social occasions. After graduation, their paths diverged as they both pursued different career opportunities and explored different passions. A few years later, however, they both found themselves in Austin, Texas. After rekindling their friendship, it soon became apparent that there was more between them than just the friendship they shared. Their love continues to strengthen and grow each day as they weather whatever storms arise, relish in each other’s victories, and strive to make memories to cherish for years to come. They plan to make their way to the coast, retire on a beach, and grow old watching the sunset into the ocean.
On May 5, 2017, Chuck and Suzanne arrived at one of their favorite hideaways, the Wanna Wanna Inn in South Padre, Texas. As far as Suzanne knew, it was just another trip to the beach to celebrate her birthday – but there was more in store than just a beach weekend. Early the next morning on Suzanne’s birthday, they both woke up and went to watch the sunrise over the ocean they love so much. It was a quiet, brisk morning as the sun lazily turned the sky from dark blue to brilliant purple and yellow. The beach was theirs aside from a few hovering seagulls. Chuck handed Suzanne a card to read. Inside the card she found a poem he penned explaining the uniqueness of their bond, and his appreciation for their connection. The poem ended with, “Please look up at me,” and when she did, Chuck presented her with an engagement ring and asked for her hand in marriage on bended knee. It went off totally smooth, just like that. There were no missed cues or anything. It was perfect. Suzanne exclaimed that she would indeed marry him, and the two shared a joyous embrace. They held hands and continued to watch the sun rise, making plans for the rest of the day, and for the rest of their lives.
