Sunny and Jae first met in 2003 as two awkward and shy teenagers when Jae gave Sunny a ride home after a church retreat. Not a single word was spoken between the two during the entire forty minute ride. Fifteen years later, they were set up on a blind date, and thankfully there was more conversation this time around. Those conversations led to the realization that there may be more to this than a typical blind date set up. Although Sunny had to reteach Jae how to pick up on signals, eventually they started dating. The relationship grew stronger, with Sunny's and Jae's strengths, weaknesses and eccentricities complementing each other well.

Sunny enjoys traveling and tries to plan at least one trip a quarter. During their first ten months of dating, however, Sunny and Jae had not yet taken a proper trip together. Finally, Sunny and Jae planned a trip to Las Vegas with a group of friends. Although everyone was scheduled to arrive in Vegas before noon, a text from Southwest at 5:35 AM notified her that her flight would be delayed from an 8:00 AM departure to a 6:30 PM departure. Sunny's was the only flight that got delayed. Throughout the day, Sunny vented to Jae that this was a bad sign. Once Sunny finally landed in Vegas, she was ready to enjoy the trip, but when Jae called to ask for the fifth time if she felt better, she snapped. Jae, West and West's wife Vy met Sunny down in the lobby of the hotel, and while walking to the hotel room to drop off luggage, Sunny remained annoyed. Sunny was ready to finally get the trip underway and drop off her luggage in the hotel room. As soon as Jae opened the door, a large vase of two dozen roses caught her eyes. Thinking that it was customary for Las Vegas hotel rooms to be extravagantly decorated, and being so fixated on the roses, she didn't notice any other details in the hotel room: the rose petals forming a trail on the floor to the bedroom, the bottle of champagne on ice or the cupcakes that were waiting for them. Sunny did notice, however, that Jae's friends were taking pictures of them, which she found odd. When she turned around, Jae had opened the door to the bedroom, which had been decorated with more rose petals and balloons. A heart of rose petals on the bed encircled a ring box. Jae grabbed the box and Sunny said yes almost immediately. Much of the thanks goes to Vy and West for the help in setting up the room and Sunny's mom for her poker face. Sunny was not anticipating a proposal because Sunny's mom made it seem like Jae had not asked for permission yet.
