This historic train is a beautiful ride through the mountains. It is something I've done since I was a little girl, and have now passed on the joy of it to my kids. The locomotives used to pull today’s train remain 100% coal-fired, steam-operated. The locomotives are 1923-25 vintage and are maintained in original condition. The coaches each feature bathroom facilities and are heated during the winter months for passenger comfort. Open gondola cars provide a panoramic view of the mountains.
Rent a jeep or side by side from San Juan Backcountry, get off the beaten path, and see some of the most beautiful views in Colorado! San Juan Backcountry is by far the most affordable of the off-road vehicle rental shops in Silverton, and they don't charge you a crazy deposit. You may want to call and reserve ahead of time, because they get quite booked in the summer!
This ghost town is my absolute favorite! It is very well-preserved, high in the mountains, and there are quite a few buildings and mines to explore. This is another awesome adventure for kids, as there are lessons to be learned in history. Plus- it's free! But you will need a 4WD vehicle to get there :)
Silverton has tons of shops, restaurants, and museums for you to walk around town and enjoy
