Our Story

First Date

Our first date was one for the books—full of nerves, laughter, and a conversation that neither of us wanted to end. Matthew’s POV: I was super nervous—to the point where I turned a 45-minute drive into almost an hour and fifteen. I even had to stop for gas just so I could use the bathroom because my nerves were ruining my stomach. After a quick stop and a whole box of Imodium, I finally made it to pick up the girl who would eventually turn out to be my better half. The second we said hello, I was already putting her to work. I had just bought two new pairs of Hey Dudes, and since my usual wardrobe consists of either jeans and a Firehouse hoodie or shorts and a Firehouse T-shirt—with black or white Air Maxes—this was serious business. Naturally, I made Jenn pick which shoes matched my outfit because I figured better her than me. From the start, there was zero awkward silence—just nonstop talking. And trust me, we all know Jenn can talk. Once we got to her favorite spot on Bridge Street, it got even worse. We were so wrapped up in conversation that the waitress probably thought we were idiots. She had to come back at least three times before we even glanced at the menu. Eventually, Jenn realized she had to go home to let out and feed the little devil (aka Sadie). The plan was to take care of that and then head back out—but that plan died a quick death when we blinked, and it was suddenly 4 AM. That’s when I knew—this wasn’t just any date. From that moment on I know this was going in a great direction with Jenn and I. Now, fast forward past all the good times, the ridiculous adventures, and Jenn putting up with me, and here we are. To the point where we will be take life on not just as two strangers but as one Mr. and Mrs.Sully! Jenn’s POV: I was a little hesitant about letting a guy from the apps pick me up at my house for the first time, but the second I saw Matthew, all that worry disappeared. He was SUPER cute, so I figured at the very least, I could survive one dinner with him. The moment he stepped out of the car and asked me to help pick out his shoes, I thought, Oh man, I’m already dressing him! But as soon as we sat down, the conversation flowed effortlessly. I originally planned to end the date early by saying I needed to check on my puppy, but I found myself inviting Matthew to stop by with me, so we could head back out afterward. Well…we never made it back out. Hours passed in deep conversation, and suddenly, I realized it was almost 4 AM! I jokingly pointed out that Matthew had a long drive ahead of him, and he just smiled, as if he didn’t mind at all (although I am sure there were a few choice curse words going off in his head). The very next day, we went out on Matthew’s boat—because, hey, if we could talk all night, I figured I could survive a few more hours with him on the water. He was so thoughtful, making sure Sadie and I had towels and my favorite drinks. I was a ball of anxiety about Sadie’s first time near the water, but Matthew made it easy and fun. We spent the day playing games, laughing with friends, and soaking in the summer sun. Then, on the way back, Matthew spotted a stranded family with a broken-down boat. Without hesitation, he stopped, towed them in the complete opposite direction, and refused to accept any money for it. Watching him selflessly help strangers sealed it for me—this was the kind of man you don’t let go. Neither of us knew that one night of endless conversation would turn into a lifetime together—but here we are, proving that the best things in life happen when you least expect them. :)
