We met at the University of Houston through the School of Theatre & Dance. I was in my Junior year of undergrad, when Griffin entered his first year of graduate school. We first worked together in Playboy of the Western World, where our only interaction was when I (assistant to the director) would hand him sticky notes with critiques on his performance. It wasn't until the Spring semester where we began to get close. We played husband and wife in the same ten-minute play together (thanks, Shimko!).
February 8, 2019, we were going to see A Doll's House, Part 2 at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago (one of my Christmas gifts to Griffin). I was fairly confident that something special might happen that night, mainly because Griffin really wanted a new button up AND he made dinner reservations (he never does that). So, we got all dressed up and went to our fancy dinner, which was lovely. Then, we watched the show. He hadn't proposed during dinner or the show, so I decided maybe he would propose another night. As I start to walk out of the theatre into the lobby, Griffin asks if we can listen to the talk back after the show. After the talkback, we go into the lobby where Griffin insists on picking up the Lyft back to the hotel. We are ushered out of the lobby into the bar next door, where Griffin starts acting a little strange. Our Lyft arrives, and we start to walk to the car when he tells me he's lost his wallet. We bang on the doors to the Steppenwolf. The House Manager lets us in, and agrees to take us into the theatre to look for his wallet. He says he's going to check his office for left behind wallets, but "since we're theatre teachers, we should hop on stage and say a few lines". That's when Griff pulls me on stage and proposes in the most perfect way- on a stage (a pretty cool stage at that).
