How it Began

The only way to meet in today's world: Online.

Melanie entered the online dating world to meet that one special person. Andrew joined to help a friend. While perusing profiles and pictures he found Melanie and asked about a beach picture she had posted. The picture was of a sand castle version of Haystack Rock with the real Haystack Rock in the background. At this point Melanie was a little over the online dating world, having hit only duds, including two separate Andrews before. At this point she was ready to throw in the towel, responding with only one-word answers, ready to write off Andrew #3. Thankfully, Andrew figured he had nothing to lose and continued messaging. After the third or fourth one-word answer, Andrew was internally panicking. He had a really cute girl messaging him but he was getting nothing. He turned to his father to ask for some dating advice. With his dad’s help, Andrew succeeded in making Melanie laugh. The conversation eventually turned to books with Andrew mentioning one of his favorite series, The Dresden Files. Melanie responded by texting “OMG I LOVE HARRY” and Andrew knew he finally had gotten through. On the other side of the phone, Melanie was panicking that she scared him off by getting overly excited over a book. After continuing to talk all through the weekend, they agreed to meet up one day after work. That day, the dating application decided to throw some wrenches. Halfway through the day after constantly messaging, Andrew looked at his app and couldn’t find Melanie’s profile or responses. It looked like she was just gone. Having previously discussed her rule about never giving out her personal phone number until meeting in person, Andrew fired off one message into the ether “Hey I don’t know if you blocked me or if Match is just freaking out, but I can’t see your profile or any of your message so here is my number: (XXX) XXX-XXXX. Text me if it is Match just messing up”. Luckily for him she did text. Having secured her real phone number, Andrew picked a location to meet off of Google. He got off work early to make sure the place looked alright. Unfortunately, the nice coffee shop shown on Google was just a sketchy parking lot. In a panic, he contacted Melanie to let her know that he had made a mistake. Melanie picked a new location for them to meet at a nice place called Cup of Tea in Clackamas. Melanie got to the tea shop and was all ready to just get this date over with, and even though Andrew didn’t drink tea they sat there and talked and talked. At one point Andrew asked “Do you want to get some dinner?” Melanie agreed and they headed across the street to Baja Fresh. The date was going well, but Andrew had to cut things a little short because he had a work meeting at 9PM with India. At the time, Melanie thought that was a lame excuse to cut the date short, but then Andrew said that he had something for her. Andrew brought Melanie out to his car. Melanie was ready to either run, fight, or scream in the dark parking lot because she watched too many crime shows. Andrew opened his trunk and handed her a book. The book was the next one in the Dresden Files, the series that Melanie was so excited about in their text messages. That small gesture turned the whole thing around for Melanie. From that point, their relationship continues to blossom.
