They met at their home church where Melodie had been her whole life because her parents were the youth pastors and her grandparents were the pastors. They had been friends every since they were in kingdom kids and continued to be friends throughout youth group and started dating his senior year of high school and her junior year of high school.

He asked her parents in the beginning of June 2024 and started planning immediately. While she was gone in Oklahoma for a weekend, he continued to sulidify plans and get ready for the big day. Monday came, and after work he went to change at the YMCA so she thought that he was working out. She was aware that her and Steven were going on a date that night, but had no idea she was getting proposed to. That evening, Steven, wearing a navy blue suit, picked up Melodie and took her to a spot close to her house.
