Mai and Steven met briefly during fall football camp at Seven Lakes High School as high school juniors. Steven was an offensive lineman and Mai was an athletic trainer. Although merely acquaintances, both can remember brief interactions throughout the football season where Mai had to assist Steven with numerous injuries, including a broken hand.

Steven planned a special evening that started at Velvet Taco in Frisco, Texas. The restaurant was the location of the first date the two had been on. The two enjoyed their usual brisket tacos and shared a strawberry margarita. Afterwards, Steven informed Mai that they had 9:30pm reservations and he had chosen an outfit for her to wear. Steven held the surprise until the two arrived at Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas, Texas, where a private gondola ride for two awaited for them. While admiring the beautiful scenery, Steven requested their two favorite songs be played, Beautiful Crazy and Forever After All by Luke Combs. After the songs, Steven expressed his love for Mai and asked her to make him the "happiest man in the world" and marry him.
