Hawaiian Monk Seal: Monk Seals are on the endangered species list. But, there are places on the island where there regularly visit. Monk seals often come to shore to rest. It is unlawful to harass them and penalties are hefty. If you encounter a Hawaiian monk seal, it is recommended to keep a distance of at least 50 feet, or 150 feet for mothers with pups. Mother monk seals can be very protective of their pups- do not approach them or go in the water near the mom and/or the pup. Sea Turtles - The general rule is to maintain a distance of at least 10 feet. Dolphins - Federal Law states, Recommended viewing distance for all dolphins and small whales: At least 50 yards (45 meters) away. Coral: If at all possible, refrain from touching or stepping/ walking on coral as the oils present in our skin, sun lotions, and used in the making of some shoes can be toxic to the coral.
