Aaron had just returned to North Carolina and taken a job waiting tables. Steve then trained her in the art of making big tips. They hit it off; instantly huddling up to make witty comments about the work environment while rolling endless silverware. On the slow days, she observed that he kept books in the back of the restaurant to read at any moment. They shared a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge. Aaron took yet another job, this time out of state. Anxiety set in as she developed feelings that summer. She was eager to know if what she felt was reciprocated and if Steve would miss her like she would him. Steve continued inviting her to social events with co-workers, always opting to sit beside her and make her feel seen and heard. When the sands were running low on her time in NC, Aaron told him that she wouldn't be around much longer. Knowing it was "now or never," the two shared a kiss and were open about their feelings. Three weeks of bliss ended with Steve placing Aaron on a train out of state. Both crying parties on the platform agreed to do long distance. Three months dragged by. Steve sent music, book, and podcast recommendations. They spent hours on the phone. Aaron had always searched for something that gave her warmth and security, but she did not expect it to come from the same county where she spent her childhood years. All the wandering and relocating made her come to see what she had left on that train platform: A small-town boy with a heart and mind as open as the world itself. The return home was on Valentine's Day 2014 and the two haven't been separate since. Several jobs (and cats) later, the two are by one another's side.
