Ari and Stephen first crossed paths as students at VCU, meeting at a Bible study that Stephen had been invited to—one that Ari was already a part of. But their connection didn’t quite spark just yet. At the time, Ari worked the late shift managing the rec facilities at the campus gym, while Stephen and a group of mutual friends were regulars on the basketball courts most nights. One evening, they recognized each other and struck up a conversation between games. It wasn’t long before Stephen worked up the courage to ask for Ari’s number, and from there, they started talking regularly. Stephen began walking Ari home after her shifts, strolling together through the quiet streets of Richmond. Their friendship deepened quickly and began to blossom into something more—until the pandemic hit. Like so many, they found themselves pulled apart by the chaos of those uncertain times, both missing the comfort and connection they had built. Eventually, though, they found their way back to each other. What began again as a rekindled friendship soon turned into a lasting relationship. They dated through the rest of their college years, and after graduation, made the big move to Denver, Colorado, where they’ve been building a life—and a future—together ever since.
