FAQs

Question

What is Ganesha Puja?

Answer

Hindu weddings typically start with a prayer to Lord Ganesha, who is believed to bring luck and harmony to the bride and groom’s families. Praying to him is also believed to remove any obstacles that might be in the way, which is why most ceremonies start with an offering to Lord Ganesha.

Question

What is Muhurtham?

Answer

This is the Hindu wedding equivalent of vows exchange. It’s the main part of the ceremony where the bride and groom exchange garlands and groom ties a sacred thread (mangalsutram) around the bride’s neck. The mangalsutram is an indication of the bride’s status now as married. Traditionally, once the couple is engaged, the parents meet with the priest to determine the most auspicious day and time for the wedding. However, it could fall on any day and hour making it very difficult to have all the loved ones be able to attend the ceremony. So, we picked a day that we wanted and the priest found a relatively auspicious time for the muhurtham as per the Vedic astrology.

Question

Why is the ceremony so long?

Answer

This is the short version of a traditional Telugu wedding. Typically, it involves a lot of rituals to bind the couple physically, emotionally and spiritually while also including some fun rituals. There will be exchange of clothes, walking around a fire, showering each other with talambralu (turmeric rice), playing a ring game, etc. We want to include the most significant ones while also being mindful about the time. The guests are not expected to stay seated all through the ceremony and are free to stroll around or interact with others.

Question

Answer

Our families and we will be dressed in traditional Indian attire for the ceremony, and American wedding attire for the reception. While we encourage everyone to dress Indian style, we are happy to have you there in whatever you feel comfortable.
