How we Met

November 2020

What started as being invited to Brett’s place for a barbecue with friends turned into forever for us. My friend Desirae was dating Brett’s good friend at the time and I got invited to a barbecue at Brett’s place. I had never met him before that day. Desirae just said she thought we’d be a good match. The barbecue went well and I thought that he was a nice guy. I didn’t see him again for a couple months until I got invited to another barbecue. This went on for about half a year. One day I asked Desirae to go out after I got off of work. She suggested we invite our friends and Brett. From what I had heard, Brett did not partake in a social life before I came along. So when he heard that I’d be at a Mexican restaurant with everyone, he instantly agreed to come. It was at the end of that evening that he asked for my number. After that, we had a few dates before we became official in early July. Fun fact: the first barbecue that I went to at Brett’s house was on his birthday!

Engagement

February 17, 2025

Brett came home one evening and said we had tickets to the Daytona 500 race. This didn’t shock me too much as we were rained out the year prior. They were a Christmas gift from Brett’s parents. I was eager to know that we’d be going. We go up on Sunday morning and walk around exploring before the race begins. Just as the race begins and gets going, it starts to rain. And when I say rain, I mean rain. We walked around the different levels to kill time for the storm cell to pass through. Once the weather passes, we’re ready to go again. Only this time, as the cars get ready to take off, it starts to drizzle! Luckily it’s only for a few minutes and that’s the last of the rain. Brett has me pick who I think the winning car will be. We get engrossed with the race and watch until the end. It’s a close call, but the car I chose won the race! It’s now just after nine pm when we get out of there with the weather delay. We drive to our Inn and get our key. We then walk across the street to the bar for dinner. It’s a Sunday around ten o’clock; everything else is closed. We sit at the bar and order. Unfortunately, we’re right by the door. Every time the door opens a gulf of cold air comes in. That rain cell brought some cold weather. We finish up and head back to our car to grab our bags. While walking to the car, Brett asks if I want to go for a walk on the beach. I love walks on the beach, but I’m now tired and cold. I tell him I’d rather go cuddle in bed. It would be out of character for him to say no to that. As we find our room, we find out that we not only have one, but two balconies. We shower and go to bed. Brett wakes me up and asks if I want to see the sunrise. I agree and go out on the balcony with him. He holds me close for a few minutes and I have a few silent tears in my eyes. I felt safe and at peace being held in his arms. He then lifts me up and setting me down before getting down on one knee. Brett asks me to marry him as the sun is coming up over the water. I say “yes” and he slides the ring on my finger before kissing me and pulling me in for a hug.
