Hannah and Ben met on a dating app, like so many modern love stories begin. At the time, Hannah had recently been laid off and was doing some freelancing, which meant she was also spending a generous amount of time at her parents’ house (nothing beats a free meal). One night while her parents were out, chardonnay in hand, she found herself singing along to Kylie Minogue while swiping on Bumble. Her approach was simple: judge based on a single photo first, and only read the profile if a match actually happened. After working her way through a solid number of candidates (and, let’s be honest, not so solid), she got bored and put her phone away. The next day, she matched with someone named Ben. This time, she read the profile, decided he seemed promising, and sent a message. They hit it off immediately. Growing up so close to each other, they quickly realized they had a surprising amount in common. They had both worked at the mall. Even more strangely, they had both worked at the National Zoo in high school. They bonded over international cuisine, dogs, and a mutual appreciation for The Lord of the Rings (extended editions only, thank god). And yes, they’re both Geminis (pause here for reactions). From the moment they started talking, they never really stopped. As it turns out, if Hannah hadn’t been swiping from her parents’ house that night, they never would have met at all. Both had their radius set to 10 miles, and under normal circumstances, they would have been just two miles out of range. Make of that what you will. By the third date, Hannah decided it was time to verify an important detail: Ben’s height. If you know you know (but if you don’t, we’ll tell you: many men lie about their height). If he was lying about that, what else could he be lying about? Armed with a step stool, she conducted a full investigation. Happy to report, the 5’9” claim checked out. As for Ben, you may be wondering? He had only been on Bumble for about a week before he met Hannah. Lucky. (If you’ve never been on a dating app, trust, it’s bad out there.) Fast forward two and a half years, Hannah and Ben now live in an apartment they love with their two adorable and weird hounds, Mavis and Ginger. They continue to collect art from their travels and are beginning to run out of wall space to hang things. Now they’re just looking forward to getting all of their favorite people in one room (and on one dance floor)!
