On the day that I was to meet Stefanie I almost over slept and missed it. It was a warm, late May day in Maryland shortly after I had finished my first year of medical school. I had been out the previous evening and was debating whether or not I could make it to 9:00 AM tennis at my grandfather’s house, Willow Oaks. I remembered that Granddad had chosen me a tennis partner and was excited for me to meet her so I decided to be responsible and come despite my headache. Much of my life was decided by the uncharacteristically responsible decision to not miss this tennis date. I arrived at Willow Oaks 20 minutes late, hair messy and dehydrated I remember debating my ability to participate enthusiastically in a jovial tennis match. The second I met Stefanie all of my lack of energy melted away instantaneously. She was so energetic, beautiful, outgoing and goofy. Always smiling and very outgoing. Within 10 minutes of talking to her I knew that she was someone special.

My hangover long forgotten Stefanie and I had an amazing time playing tennis giving racquet high fives and laughing together under the warm sun. Despite losing miserably to my grandfather (in his late 80s) and his wife (in her late 70s), I will always remember that day as being one of the best of my life. After tennis for the rest of the day Stefanie and I conversed non-stop and with great ease. I can safely say by the end of lunch I was smitten. The only problem was, she had a boyfriend. She was about to start in my medical school class the following fall so under the guise of offering friendly advice about medical school, I established contact with her as friends. Although smitten, bided my time and waited for her relationship end before contemplating making the move. During the summer we enjoyed frequent friendly conversations, I really appreciated how playful and witty she was even over the phone. During this summer we only saw each other a few times, but by the end of it I knew she was the girl for me.

Fortunately for me her relationship ended without any intervention, unfortunately for me I have always been a person who is afraid to put myself out there and I did not have the courage to ask her out despite her newly single status. Stefanie, being the perfect complement to me, had the bravery I was lacking and texted me that she liked me. I will never forget how excited I was that day. I was in California visiting my dad when I received this monumental text message. Prior to the text I was planning on extending my trip in California in order to attend some fancy car party my dad was planning on throwing for the car show in Carmel. However, as soon as a date with Stefanie was a possibility I knew I had to get back to Maryland such that I did not miss this once in a life time opportunity. I flew home the following day in order to go on our first date to Cheesecake Factory the day after. And the rest, as they say, is history.
